    Macro Question

Hello! I am not very well versed in macros for FF14 so I figured I'd ask here! I was wondering if there was a macro that would automatically Shift+Up or Shift+Down after specific abilities.

I ask because I spend a lot of time clicking abilities all over the place and it would be far more convenient to be able to Shift+Up after casting Dreadwyrm Trance and use that hotbar for the duration of DwT and Shift+Down after Deathflare to go back to my normal rotation. So is there a macro that can accomplish this? Or should I just manually use Shift+Up and Shift+Down in fights? Or are there other recommendations on how to best manage all of my abilities?

    Thanks!

For me, yes. Hence why I came here asking for advice. On my SCH it's not an issue, but for my SMN I find myself spending way too much time looking at my hotbars than the actual fight so I'm asking for advice on how to reduce the number of buttons I need to press so I can focus more on the fight.

No, there isn't, sadly. This is because it would open the door to far too many automated scripts and using bots. Yes, there are a lot of abilities to use which they hope to trim down a bit in the upcoming expansion.

One thing you might want to look into is an external macro system, like a Razer or Logitec keyboard/mouse/left-handed key pad. These also let you macro in partial second duration and it also lets you "queue" up your abilities mid-fight, which the in-game macro system does now allow.

Thanks for the helpful reply! I actually have a Logitec mouse that has a bunch of buttons on it so I'll look into macroing them when I get off work. Also, I actually did find a way to do what I was talking about in the original post...

    /macroicon "Dreadwyrm Trance"
    /action "Dreadwyrm Trance"
    /hotbar copy current 1 current 4

This switches me to a new hotbar upon casting Dreadwyrm Trance and then to go back to original hotbars...

    /macroicon "Deathflare"
    /action "deathflare"
    /hotbar copy current 1 current 5

This switches me back to my normal rotation bar. Saves me 2 buttons to press. But it sounds like macroing to my mouse wil be even more helpful

There are two issues with your macros, so take note:

    1. Macros don't queue, so it is a time loss and a DPS loss, though it can be very small if you have great ping.

    2. If you hit this macro and the ability is unavailable (on cooldown, during a cast, whatever), the hotbar switch will still happen. You have to be very careful with these so you don't screw yourself.

I can just +1 what dragonseth said about using macros in general "be careful they might cost you time and aren't 100% save to use".

I can list some macros I started back in the days as young smn even though i don't use them anymore -
but to make things easier at the beginning especially the pet-management you can try some of those (Garuda-Egi examples):

    AoE pet combo:
    /macroicon "Painflare" (or Bane)
    /ac "Painflare" (or /ac Bane)
    /wait
    /pac "Aerial Slash"

this macro simply combines your aoe-skills with Rudas aoe skill either
Painflare or after setting Dots and spreading them on a mob via Bane

DoT Extend (mostly in DW stance)
    /macroicon "Tri-disaster"
    /ac "Tri-disaster"
    /wait
    /ac "Contagion"

Not much to say using tri to set all DoTs at once and directly extend
    them with Rudas buff

    By my side
    /macroicon "Aetherflow"
    /ac "Aetherflow"
    /pac "Heel"

This one becomes handy if you have to move quite a lot in a boss fight or
savage to avoid mechanics or aoe-dmg, forcing your egi to follow you time
    by time in your rota

    Buffed Enkindle
    /macroicon "Enkindle"
    /ac "Spur" (or /ac "Rouse"
    /wait
    /ac "Enkindle"

Not much to say here as well make your strongest egi-atk even stronger.
you can combine both buffs in one macro as well to get the maximum dmg
of Enkindle but you loose the pet-buff flexibility... dunno if its worth it.

    Switch target
    /macroicon "Bio"
    /pac "Windblade"
    /wait
    /ac "Bio"

This one is one of the less im still using from time to time - Bio is instant and
is the DoT you have to refresh the most, perfect to switch Rudas target instantly
(f.e. in hugh mobs where a special one got prio to get burst down)

    Its getting dark
    /macroicon "Shadow Flare"
    /ac "Swiftcast"
    /wait
    /ac "Shadow Flare" <t>
    /ac "Shadow Flare"

Flexibel instant Shadowflare first line provides a direct target if selected,
second line provides setting it manually if u haven't selected a target.

    Unleash the Dragon
    /macroicon "Dreadwyrm Trance"
    /ac "Raging Strikes" (archer x-skill)
    /wait
    /ac "Dreadwyrm Trance"

most likely for your opener cause of the long cd of RS – gives you a 20% dmg buff
for every action you ll do in the upcoming 15 secs of DW (DoTs, Fester, Painflare, Ruin lll and Deathflare)

Like I said they are not optimal in terms of flexibility but you don't have to care about micro managing
your pet or selfbuffs that much - in the end how further you progress in endgame content goes the less
macros should be used at all ^^

The best way to manage all your abilities is to learn effective keybinding. Everyone has their personal preference, but here's something to get started: https://taugrim.com/2011/04/07/guide...d-keybindings/

That guide promotes a high mobility, low panoply configuration that isn't specifically applicable to FFXIV. Here, you need a configuration that can accommodate a large panoply (32 abilities for most jobs; more on SMN/SCH), with minimal movement.

Admittedly... I remember in FFXI having to do this for some things I was hoping not to have to do it in this game, but honestly the more complex summoner gets, the more I may have to.

I remember in FFXI you'd swap gear... then cast the spell, so each spell was optimized with the perfect gear for casting. So in one cast you'd cast a Blizzard using gear swap to the Ice Staff, or cast Lightning you'd macro gear swap to Lightning Staff... then hit another gear swap back to the sword... etc etc... or the Chainspell + Warp to save the party's bacon when overwhelmed. Or Stoneskin + Convert + Cure 4...

As a Red Mage you had a ton of them for that.
