why not?, I need those low level gear to get GC seals, if you need gear for your class play with that class.

If something drops and I can need on it, I almost always will unless someone specifically asks for X item beforehand. Otherwise, even if I don't need it for gear progression, I always need the GC seals or gear for my retainers. The system is fine the way it is now.

Let me preface that I agree with the OP in the sense that I usually find Needing on an item that isn't a personal upgrade for you to be in very bad taste.
But, I'm not down on it or the people that do it in THIS particular game because in most dungeon situations usually you're the only person of your Job there that can Need on such items and dungeon gear is very easily replaced and practically worthless most of the time anyway.
I usually play tanks so I almost never have any competition for any Job specific drop for me, but when I'm leveling a dps class, if there is someone there that can also Need on the same stuff as me, I usually just ask. A polite "hey, I really need the upgrades from this dungeon if they drop, do you mind passing?" can go a long way.

Sorry, but no.
I remember when WOD was still relatively new and I did a run with my healer. Healer gloves dropped after the first boss and I needed on them cause they looked nice for glamour, which resulted in an ongoing rant from the other healer for the rest of the entire raid. He kept going on about how much of an asshole I am for needing it when he could have increased his ilvl by 1 or 2. Excuse me, for I can't sympathize with people like that.
I'm a decent person and I have had people playing the same job as me saying "Hey, I can see that your ilvl is higher than mine, so would you mind passing the gear if you don't necessarily need it for anything?" There. That's all it takes and 99% of the time I'll say "Sure, I'll pass it." All it takes is communication and not being a dick about everything in this game, wich is rare these days.
It's how SE made the loot system in FFXIV and I don't think you have to justify yourself for it as long as it remains this way. It's an entire different story if they decide to change it up of course.
Oh, so according to OP, I queue as a healer and OP queues as a bard, and you should be allowed to need on healer gear while I have to greed? Screw that noise.
If you want the gear, you best be playing as that job and if not, then you get what's left over.
Im on both sides of the fence. First off... yes asking simply "Can you pass if you dont need?" goes a long way... HOWEVER! Not everyone will go by that. Some people just roll need simply b/c the option is there and they get some personal satisfaction outta it. its annoying yes.. dont run with those people![]()
I got a super lecture from a group the other day about rolling need because it was wrong of me to do so.
My argument was, just because I am not using it in the same way as you are, does not mean I am not using it. If you need it as a stand in piece let me know and I will pass but if you don't say anything you bet I am rolling need, because I still need it too.
To the people saying: "you shouldn't be rolling need if it's not an upgrade for you". Who are you to decide what is an upgrade for someone? A person trying to get it for glamour is trying to UPGRADE their look. A person getting it for desynth is trying to UPGRADE their desynth skill and get crafting supplies. A person getting it for trade in for GC seals is probably trying to UPGRADE their relic or squadron. In any case it is being used to help that player in some way and they deserve that help just as equally as anyone else playing the game.
Srry I'm starving for seals.Need 200k seals for my 4th airship.
700 coke,baby ......
Shit, if anything rolling for glamour represents a HIGHER level of Need than gearing up. When I roll for off-class jewelry, for instance, that stuff gets turned in for seals or converted to materia the moment a higher ilevel piece falls into my inventory. When I roll a good glamour piece though, that gear is going in my retainer and staying there for potentially YEARS. (Hello, i70 Darklight pieces)
Not that I'd advocate that people not be allowed to roll Need for gear upgrades. Because that'd be pretty petty, wouldn't it?![]()
