So first off let me say I\\'m stoked about Samurai, but I just want to know why they made the guard on the katans so large. Any ideas? Sword still looks cool but I\\'m worried it may look silly in game because the guard stands out so much.

I hadn't really noticed it; your post made me go back and watch the trailer again (for like the billionth time cuz I'm so flippin excited). IMO that guard isn't so bad. It's definitly on the large side but I'm sure they will have different looking katanas so glamouring over it shouldn't be an issue.
Chances are that was the level 70 weapon. I am sure there will be plenty of more normal looking Katanas that you can glamour.

That katana is one of what'll probably be close to a hundred over the course of Stormblood's life. I'm sure we'll get all shapes and sizes.
You also have to remember... this is a Final Fantasy game. Exaggerated weapon size is par for the coarse.
I'm sure they will have a wide variety, though, from dungeon drops, etc. Just look at every other weapon type in the game. They have their comically large weapons, the super gaudy types, and the more realistic types.
You'll just have to find one you like and glamour it. I might even hazard a guess that one type might even come without the guard.
The tsuba is probably large so that the unique designs for each katana can be more easily seen.

Some without the guard, some with curved blades, some with awkward spike-y protrusions, some glowing, some thicker, some thinner...
There are only so many ways to shape a blade, so I'd just take a look at what DRK and PLD get and then think of something similar, except in slightly longer/sleeker.
I really do not like the Tsuba from the Relic sword...but I am sure it will be one of few Katanas with large Tsuba. There's glam for sure =D
Edit: I also like the way they did the Anima weapons for DRK/PLD with the engraving so , I doubt they will but I really have to put a Anima Weapon quest line for Samurai XD
I really dislike most of the DRK weapons. A good 90% of them don't even look like greatswords. They look like comically over-sized daggers or letter openers. There are only a handful of DRK weapons that actually look like a two-handed sword. The one I use is a dungeon drop from Aurum Vale. I mean, let's face it: The best looking gear comes from dungeons.
I don't see why SAM will be any different. Most of them will probably be goofy-looking over-scaled weapons, with a few choice good looking weapons from a couple of dungeons. Hell, even the base low level crafted weapons look better than the gaudy crap we get from tomes.
i dont know about that, katana most distinctive appearance is the single edged blade, if they change it to something else like double edge blade or over size it like a butcher weapon, thats not a katana anymore thats pld and drk weaponMost of them will probably be goofy-looking over-scaled weapons
the guard, hilt and the scabbard is probably the only thing they can change freely, not much on the blade
at best they can add sfx like aura or particles for the blade or maybe just outright make a lightsaber considering japan liking to star wars
also if SE really going to make sam stay true as sam, then their weapon sheath animation will be the first one in ff14 ever to have the scabbard on the player hip unlike other class which just magically attach on their back/hip lol
