As many have already said, general FF etiquette is to let the tank pull. You can arrange with the party to grab mobs if you need to maintain stacks/effects but this may always be ideal and they're not required to acquiesce.

Meh, I track party cooldowns and have Misdirect (Shadewalker for DPS-Bards). Even without threat transfers I've never been kicked for it.
Just know that battle-rezes are a precious commodity (loooong CD) there; they won't waste it on you, especially if you did it "wrong". No etiquette enforcement required.
This is why I love doing dungeons with people from my FC, as we love to take in the sights when inside the dungeons, as the art department does an amazing job
And we decide ourselves if we wanna speedrun for tomes, or take it slow, specially if we bring a new/returning player through the dungeon.
And in every game, I see anyone who pulls before the tank, as rude and impolite. And I know for a fact that this and even less is tolerated in WOW dungeons before getting kicked.
If people ask before they start if to pull small or large packs, its easier to get what you want.
I'm surprised no one mentioned FFXI in all of this. Surely someone here must've played that game back in its glory days. I experienced my fair share of DPS pulls in XI, but FFXI leveling mechanics were vastly different, in that it didn't have instanced levelling dungeons. What it did have though was a party system that was reliant on good communication.
In order for a group to get good, efficient exp, everyone needed to be on the same page. If the tank and healer was geared enough then one of the DPS could run off to grab another mob and bring it back to the group to keep the exp chain alive. If the healer didn't have the MP to sustain chain pulls then they'd have to let the others know to rest for MP.
Anyways, back on topic of FF14, because of dungeons and DF, it's rare for any kind of "planning" to go into a run, aside from boss explanations for anyone new. If your sole purpose is to speed through a dungeon then just ask at the beginning and you'll avoid any problems.
I don't mind other classes pulling some mobs towards me if I'm tanking a pack and more monsters spawn for example if like a White mage wants to pull a pack of monsters out of my reach to me so I can unleash/overpower/flash on them while I'm already holding aggro with a large pack.
I will say I don't like it if a healer or DPS is running ahead of me and pulling things when I'm meant to be tanking.
