I understand the frustration since it is something you weren't used to, but its just super hard to swim against the current. Most of the community here is pretty uniformly decided that tanks should be the one to pull mobs/bosses and they have good reasons (which I agree with) to back up why that should be the normal operating procedure. Thanks Miste for a constructive post.
And you're right. I think I have decided that it will come down to accepting I may get kicked some times. Statistically, it's probably at around 5% of my groups. It's just I haven't experienced this before in any other mmo so I was venting a bit.
My suggestion would be not to accept you might be kicked, but to just stop pulling as a DPS job. It isn't going to speed up your run very much to be worth getting kicked over or worth messing your team up.
Most players are used to the tank pulling and at higher levels if you continue this you might cause wipes. I mean I know you said you attempt to judge whether or not your group is capable first...but there might be occasions where you judge wrong.
Don't forget several of the more important DPS Commandments. These are time honored and true across ALL games.
1) I shall not move ahead of the tank.
2) I shall not initiate a fight; only the tank will.
3) I shall avoid standing in the fire.
4) I shall reduce my aggro if I am outpacing the tank.
OP referred to the impatient players who kicked him as kids, and mentioned (Hydaelyn Forbid) having played other MMOs, and people went nuts. Someone with a different gaming culture inadvertently hurting someone's feelings isn't really trolling.

So you expect the healer to spam heal you, a clothie, and that's supposed to make the run faster? I'm guessing you haven't tried healing in this game. Checking your lodestone profile... yup a grand total of 0 levels on healers.
Here's the thing. By making the healer spend more time healing you than they'd have to in order to keep up a tank you're preventing the healer from doing significant amounts of damage. The biggest difference in clear speed comes from whether the healer is doing 0 dps or all the dps they can.
So if we discard all other valid reasons to kick you (like stressing the healer, stressing the tank, not allowing TP to generate or making things more difficult for melee with positional attacks) and we just look at what's efficient, you are still in the wrong. Preventing the healer from doing damage is a huge dps loss. Making positioning harder for the tank can make melee miss their positionals or chase mobs, and that's another dps loss. Your preferred play style is not only annoying to everyone around you but also goes against what you're trying to accomplish. I recommend you drop this counterproductive habit.
You came here calling everyone else kids and blaming other people for not catering to your whims. Addressing people in such a way does not imply you're trying to understand other points of view.

It makes you lol until you see DPS standing in the fire =)
But yes, in general, never pull. Ever. Unless you're the tank. But that's a different can of worms.
As far as not standing in the fire goes, thankfully -most- attacks in the game are made obvious by big circles or columns or arcs of blaring orange on the ground. Indications to not stand there. Some monsters and bosses only telegraph with movements some abilities you need to dodge. Like when Gowrow breathes fire in Sohm Al Hard More.
The FFXIV community is generally one of the best out there so long as you're not intentionally making things harder for people. Ask for help and you shall receive.
Happy Adventuring!
Just wanted to follow up. The game is 3 years old now and we have pretty much figures out the fast and most efficient way to level. Through trial and error, the current method is the best overall.

Gotta agree with most everyone else here... if you wanna set the pace of the pulls you tank. As a healer if I see a dps doing what you're doing I'll let you die. I'm not getting aggro from healing you because you were being impatient. Tanks, and to a lesser extent healers, decide the pace of a dungeon, not the dps.

How many men am I involved with? Well that depends... do you mean men as in males? Or just midlanders?
Words taken out of context. Am I watching the news right now!? =D
