Casual Returning Player Asks for Item Leveling Advice

Good day fellow Warriors of the Light! I have returned from a long break on the game. I left around patch 3.1 but currently progressing MSQs up until 3.3. I wanted to push further into latest MSQ patch but I noticed I am having problem holding enmity(I main tank) on the dungeon because of my low iLVL gears.

What would you guys recommend? Are there better ways to efficiently progress my iLVL as well as unlocking contents? I play casually so I might have the degree of intensive grinding motivation BUT would do if necessary.

Right now I unlocked the normal Alexander Midas to grind my items to ilvl 220~230 since I am currently sitting to my 210s. I know there are other raids to unlock for me get better gears but I don't surely know what is the efficient sequential progression.

Any tips and ideas would surely help me. I would like to thank in advance for those player who would put an effort helping me

Just a first thing, but what weapon are you using? A relatively simple one to get is from the Palace of the Dead, where once you can get the weapon is i235 to start, and i255 once upgraded. Not the best, but a relatively decent one.

Right now I am using the ilvl 230 Axe. So how will be the grind to PoTD. Would I invest large amount of time getting the upgraded weapon? Or it would be reasonable to get it before I hit more than ilvl 260 weapon?

You can get the PotD weapon in roughly a day or two depending on how much time you want to throw at it. If you want to do other things, you are looking at around a few days to a week of doing daily runs. It really just depends on the groups and the amount of time you have. You could likely do it in maybe two 1-100 runs I should say. Honestly I have been capped in potd for so long I don't remember 100%. It's a good supplement and if you go on your lvl 60 it will give you both lvl 60 tomes. So win/win

To be fair, there is no getting out of grinding in an MMO, it is the nature of the beast. Esp the FFXIV beast.

If you really do not want a grind you may want to stay away, but if you don't mind some light grinding, tomes are your best bet at any given time.

I completely understand that. I just want to make the grinding to minimum as much as possible. Plus, I really love the game. I like how I make friends here, together making journey to Eorzea :P

Well it does depend how much time you spend in Palace and not even joking here... if RNG is with you.
Some weapons took me a long amount of time redoing the same floors (and yes i have cleared up to 100 multiple times)
Running Alex for better (temporary upgrades even) is a not bad way to go and once you have high enough ilv you can go for a Sophia EX weapon.
Save up the tomes for eventual better gear as well

One thing this guide does not mention is that you can use PvP to short circuit the process and jump from ilvl150 to ilvl235 (high enough for expert roulette).

But since you're already 210... probably just go for scripture and fill in with lore.

As someone who just came back from break. I ran potd to get the 235 weapon, used tomes to grab a few items to boost my ilvl and bumped my weapon by beating Sophia Ex for the 255 weapon. It is actually an easy fight. You could also get 250 gear on mb if you have the gil.

You could upgrade the 230 axe to 240 by running A8 a few times (I think 4 times). Then just run A12 every week until you can get the 260 weapon. For fast gear upgrades you could run Alex and dungeons until you can enter A9-A12 to farm a full 250 set.
