Since they can't even put a toggle feature on the simplest of features so far in XIV, I doubt it will be togglable(spelling?)

I also feel like chat channels promote a gateway of which the most immature people somehow become, even more immature, and they mutate into douchebags.

When comes down to it, XI did just fine without a global chat feature and I think XIV will do equally as fine.

Normal shout is also used for stupid things, as is say. Just like any other type of chat you would be able to filter it out if you wanted to and it could have its own tab to avoid chat log spam.

Draven, considering you can already filter certain things in your chat log, I don't see the ability to turn off a chat channel to be a problem.

Right now, the player base is relatively small. There isn't a huge amount of communication going on. Something like this could really help the community especially as it grows.

You could be right about that toggle Celyia, but I still have my doubts. SEs track record of things done right in MMOs continues to decline in my eyes. I'm not trying to sound pessimistic, it's just how I feel :\

And when it comes to my experience with global chats, again, I just feel like it creates a window for people to act like fools. Yeah, sometimes they do /shout or /say stupid things but that's pretty rare so far and a limited audience. Some people really get their jelly beans off though by talking nonsense when they think a lot of people are listening to them. I mean cmon...just look at the forums!

You will always have players that will "abuse" this kind of future. As long as you can turn it on/off or as long as it has its own tab I do not mind. I played WoW for years, but I rarely used the general chat and had it turned off or on a tab I never looked at.

As long as I can turn it off, I'm cool.

I don't need more stuff clogging my chat window as it is...

Its true SE has made alot of mistakes but if they treat public chats like they did in FFXI, ive heard of stories of ppl getting temp bans and what not just for shouting curse words in towns and getting reported.
So to be honest I dont worry about ppl acting like fools too much, but its always possible it could become a place where too many ppl regularly type things like "tele plz" and " selling/buying these items" etc.

I guess that's my point. Even if SE gets it right, the players are still going to "break" it so to speak by using it without shame.

While I liked world chat in WoW the one thing that annoyed me to no end was the people who used it to be complete idiots. 99% of the time, no, 100% of the time there was some stupid argument going on int world chat and it really just kind of ruined the atmosphere of the game.

I admit that it was useful sometimes...when you could read through all the stupidity.

I completely understand the reservation, but keep in mind that WoW has a different playerbase from FFXIV. We tend to have older, more mature players here. The insanity that happens on WoW (and on that game, I do keep general and other chats turned off) wouldn't likely be as prevalent here. Plus, with ignore, it's easy to just tune out repeat offenders.

The thing is, people who wish to be obnoxious -will- find a way to be obnoxious. Whether they spam /poke a bajillion times or spam in shout or say, they know how to get their attention.

I still think that a chat channel could do too much good for those who wish to use it, especially considering that one of the biggest complaints I've heard from people who have left this game have been "it's just too quiet".

Now if we were all forced to listen to this chat channel all the time, that'd be a different story. I wouldn't want it, either. But considering you can turn off /shout, /say, and others, I really don't think SE would implement such a feature that would work differently.
