All the people in this thread who get so upset at other people's lack of originality and creativity make me laugh. It's so sad it's funny. Are you really so bored with the game that you have to look for things like this to get upset over? On topic I agree with OPs sentiment but not how far they want to take it. If a character is still level 1 and has not been logged onto in at least 365 days I feel the name should be placed up for grabs again and if they ever do come back to the game (fat chance, level 1 and hasn't logged on in a year or longer? Dont kid yourself) then they should just have to change their name to something else.

It's starting to get annoying - people that never play on that character, take popular names. Just rename those lvl1 inactive characters (I am pretty sure that it shouldnt be the case for lvl60, or atleast 1 level 60). It gets annoying when I want to have X name on a server while that person hasn't logged in for months, if not, years. Frustrating.

it would be unfair for people who paid for the game and/or subscription at one point in time (and the potential future re-subscription). some people who are also currently playing and subscribed have few-many level 1-49 (or higher) characters just because they want to - it's unfair for them also because they pay the monthly fee like everyone else.

if this was a free to play game, it'd be fine i guess to have a system that deletes obviously abandoned characters because it's just taking up server space/resources

A few years ago TERA decided to do a name wipe of everyone who had not logged in for 2 years. Popular names were freed…and then instantly scooped up by new name hoarders.

I'm originally from City of Heroes, where if you were a Cloud, Goku, or Stark, you'd wake up to your new name Generic Hero 006313796. You could look like Wolverine all you wanted as long as your name was The Claw Guy. If anything, famous names outside of FF (since Highwind and Strife are in the name generator) should be locked down.

I have to wonder whay you would want a "popular name". How about being original? Why get confused with all those other players whose names are almost identical?

It's funny this thread was created..last night someone was telling me how in WoW they purposely took someones name and how you could do that fairly easily in WoW. T.T

I don't think that is a good idea....in a game like this where you can have a last name, just be a bit more creative ^^ Make your character original!

By definition, that would no longer be an inactive character yes. If you enter your house and log out again, the housing demolition timer resets. However, that would be you making a concious effort to keep your character name, OP is talking about people who have literally abandoned their characters.
