Drk being a tank.... i was okay with. If they made Sam a tank too.... i would have never forviven SE. Samurai needed to be a dps, glad that's what it got to be.

I feel that having a SAM as DPS and a shogun tank is almost repetitive; if you take a look at the jobs, we don't really see repetition - at least, in terms of 'culture.' ex: DRG with aerial and MNK with melee. sure, NIN + MNK are similar in that they're melee but MNK is based off of Chinese and NIN for Japanese. this wouldn't be the case for SAM and shogun
we have MCH with range + turret but a supportive (MP restoration, etc) range DPS for BRD- similar but not entirely alike. healers: WHM, SCH, and AST respectively: big-heals, nullifying damage (but numerically lower heals), and buffs/dual roles of WHM and SCH
I can see shogun as a branch for SAM - something like ACN, SCH, and SMN. however, I feel like Squeenix can pull that off once but may not pull it off again. but it'd still be interesting to see a shogun tank
it's relevant to note that I'm not taking sides; it's just as the situation is,based on existing patterns, it seems unlikely that they would implement a similar job
I do not believe culture would play a factor, but theme instead. The theme for tanks are to wear heavy armor and, as of now, heavy weapons. Currently Samurai as a Job uses a Katana, which is usable as a one handed weapon, and wearing robes rather then actual armor. The theme for Samurai now, is an Edo period Samurai, a time of relative peace. We can assume that peace will not last, and war will come to the east. It would be during this time that a Shogun Job would be best thematicly implemented, in times of strife and not necessarly only with the Garlenian Conflict.
As for the branch, it would not be possible unless the devs decided to change how the Job system works. But they could tie in Shogun with lore rather then by Job. Much like how DRG uses plate armor.
Shogun in Japanese also means General, Field Commander, or Field Leader. (The Samurais that wear the war coat, jinbaori, over their armor). We are also talking in the realm of Fantasy where leaders take part in battles.

I can see that as a reason for shogun, and it's possible that SAM and shogun having repetitions give enough similarities that SE can 'meld' in a shogun based off of similar cultures with a different theme.
as he mentioned, shoguns are generals. I suppose it is weird, thinking about it, but then again, we're in a fantasy realm. (realistically, lalas can't defeat rogaedyns in a physical fight, but they can in FF soooo there we go XD)
