How can people deal with the RNG in fishing?

I finally got my Fisher to lvl53, needing 3 HQ Icepicks to turn in. I've been at this for 2 hours and only gotten 2 so far. Is this normal? It nearly gives me others except that one fish. Also, i feel that powerful hookset is becoming useless to me.

Yeah the RNG in fishing can really suck. Take a look at your perception and see if you can meld some materia to help boost it a bit.

The Icepicks were frustrating but to point this out.
Powerful Hookset won't work on the Icepicks. Powerful is used for larger fish and Icepicks are a tiny fish. So ya forget using it until you need it for bigger fish.

It took me more than 2 hours to get 3 fish. In fact 3 hours +1 more after that. Because in frustration I left to do other things until I could convince myself to try again.

Fishing in this game sucks. Regardless of how far above your stats may be, you will always see fish get away.

So don't bother, go try out a different job.

Listen to the tug ur rod makes, there is a light tug, a cracking sound or the of ur rod breaking (big fish), and use the correct hookshot, since its a tiny fish u want to listen for a light tug and use perc hookset instead of powerful. Once u understand the fishing mechanic it is alot less rng than u think.

Yeah unfortunately, patience doesn't work for the ice picks at level 53. You need precision hook set, which you won't get for a few levels later, works on the smaller fish.

Under the patience buff, a light tug(usually smaller fish) you use precision hookset, a medium/large (larger fish) tug you use powerful hook set.

Also check your weather, blizzards and snow give you the best catch rates for the icepick

grind the class with leves or company trade ins. You can get the required fish from the marketboard and dont have to deal with rng
