Removal of Surnames

How do you contain all that Epic in just one person?

Easy, not enough pills/too many :P. Also I wouldn't mind an option to toggle last names off. I don't think it would hurt anyone seeing multiple Zahak's running around. Could always /check or target to see what the last name is.

As for tells, SE just needs to add in a search system that can actually search peoples names. Unless they have already, have not checked in a while! OR be able to use the tab button like the auto chat feature and cycle through your friends names.

I agree. Not even WOW requires surnames, and one server holds more people than all of FFXIV's population combined.

I love the surnames so yay! Really is it that hard to come up with a surname man laziness...

Also if you ever do first "The Horn and the Hand Faction" leves they actually poke fun at the people that try to use Sephiroth as their name and mention at least 4 different ways people to try to write it before the NPC gives up on trying to remember.

I disagree with the notion that surnames are harmless.

Surnames have their advantages, sure, but there are several downsides as well. For example, as I already pointed out, one downside is that their forced usage strips players of their freedom to choose the name they really want (I wanted to simply name my character Rhianu, but the game forced me to come up with a surname, which took away a certain degree of my freedom). Plus it also creates a situation in which every single player has a ridiculously long name, thus making it annoying when trying to send /tells, and creating an excessive amount of on-screen text. Also, some names just feel less interesting when a surname is stuck on the end of it.

Surnames should be available as an option, but they should be just that: an option. They should not be mandatory.

That's the thing though, without surnames, you'll have people with Rhianu4352 and people trying to spell it different ways. The point of surnames is to where you can have the same first name with spelling. I get the 'sounds better without' but I'm sure there is a name that would sound good... or you just picked a bad first name

Actually, the name "Rhianu" is hardly ever taken in any online game I play. So forcing me to use a surname to guarantee that I'll get a name that I would have most likely gotten anyway is simply irritating and unnecessary.

Of course I do recognize that some people might have a preferred name that is more common and more likely to be taken, and so surnames should be an option that those people can use if they discover their desired name is already taken, or if they simply want to have a name in two parts.

Not having clear rules causes confusion. So no, either you give sunames to everyone or you have everyone with only a name, and get all the Rhianuxxx, Rhianuthesecond, Rhianuhohoho and so forth.

Only to those who only want one name it may. I think if you consider the people that WANT a surename but only a first is available, then they suffer the same limit to creative freedom.

I like surname. Honestly, naming system doesn't effect the game itself. It is an extra option you got. So, it is useful.

Ahh, so you're arguing that we need surnames so people don't need to be creative. Ok cool. Also, numbers aren't allowed in most popular mmos
