    Removal of Surnames

No offense, but less than 1% of the population has an interesting, clever, or powerful sounding name. This is virtually unattainable when requiring surnames.

I believe the only reason for surnames was because of the drama that occurs 8 years down the road when you have to merge servers...

Surnames should not exist in FFXIV. Not only do most people's names suck, but it makes the game look like a text-adventure in crowded zones.

I won't even bring up the fact that trying to send a /tell to Whargershire Alizeilaronetsunakashima as he runs across the screen is often a disaster.

If you are in defense of surnames, please know that your name sucks and is not memorable to anyone other than yourself (unless you're Belgian, Rofl, that is...)

EDIT: The solution we have all agreed upon is to make surnames optional. Those people who don't care about having a name that sucks can keep their surnames. Those of us who want to be seen with only a nickname will be satisfied as well. Yoshi-P! Fix this right away!

Yeah, i thought they were sort of silly.

It anything it just makes /telling a hell of a lot more tedious.

First of all, I despise having to mis-name my character to be able to have one that I want. This game lets me walk through town once without seeing 10 people with the following names..

    -Cloud
    -Clowd
    -Clouud
    -Clouuud
    -Clooud

    or

    -Sephiroth
    -Sephiiroth
    -Sephirothh
    etc
    etc
    etc

At the very least people can use a more diverse set of names. It iritates the living hell out of me when I am forced to misspell a name that I often like just to obtain it. I loved having my name as Amecia, but I'm forced to scour name books, wikipedia, google, etc for another hour or two just to find a decent one and hope that one isn't taken as well.

Yes, the /tell function sucks right now. It would be nice if we could get a CTRL + R function for auto reply to last sender.

You do know that if you are sending /tells to just one person you can do /cm t Mr Smith , and it will set that as your default chat right?

I like the idea of Surnames it makes the game a lot more realistic in my opinion. And it prevents random thrown together names with no spaces.. All they need to do is fix the /tell functions and search features so that only one half of the name needs to be put in to tell or look for someone .. Or maybe a /sea all function like in FFXI.. And to fix the name crowding ..there was also a function that could take off names in XI just by typing /names. Surnames aren't the problem the /tell function and search feature is where the game needs work.

Um.. you can use CTRL + R and it will cycle though roughly the last 5-ish people that you have talked to so you don't have to keep typing their name, this has been in the game for a while now.

As for surnames, I really like having them and I have seen some very clever ones running around. I don't think they will remove them, and I hope they don't because I've also become attached to my name. <3

We do have Ctrl+R. Pressing it repeatedly scrolls through the people who've sent you a /tell. I believe pressing Ctrl+T scrolls through the people you've sent /tells to as well.

What would be nice to have is the ability to set up something like an in-game "rolodex" of sorts. Enter names of people you most often send /tells to.. this way you press Ctrl+T or type /tell, start typing the first few letters of their name, press TAB and it'll complete the name most closely matching those first three letters in your rolodex. Press <Enter> or <Tab> again, and it sets that as the name. Then you just type as you normally would.

It could be an extension of the social/friend list, perhaps.

When you send tells, the names are saved in the auto translator.
Type /t, typing the first 3 letters of the name, press TAB and choose the right name if the name is in the auto-translator.

You can do this. Try it.
