So, I know SAM is going to be STR based, but could someone direct me to where they said they'd be sharing actual gear with MNK? And is there any clarification if they mean "All gear ever will be shared" or just "Stuff that's in game now" will be shared, like they did with NIN?

They didn't say SAM would share gear with MNK for the rest of time just that their gear would be shared with MNK. The phrasing suggests that it's a similar relationship to BRD/MCH and yeah, they're probably together forever except for AF.

From FanFest Frankfurt keynote, "Those of you who uh play melee DPS are maybe going to worry about what type of equipment you'll be wearing, and battling other players over. The uh equipment will be in the same section as monks. So all you ninjas out there, breathe a sigh of relief."

The last line addressing the ninja population suggests that Striking-type gear (in dungeon sets, raid sets, and non-AF tomestone sets) will from 4.0 on be MNK/SAM, and MNKs and SAMs will be fighting over drops while NINs maintain the position of having uncontested armorsets.

He probably would have said so if it was only a certain amount of gear that would be shared, and might even have pointed out Ninja because they did share 50 and under gear with Monk. While we are getting more inventory space each job not sharing gear WILL take up alot of space AND means more resources being put into it.

Right now Monks, Dragoons, and Ninjas each have their own gear. Tanks, Healers, Ranged and Magic all share gear with atleast one class. SAM sharing with Monks means that only their weapons add a little more time and resources to development time. Red Mage will PROBABLY share with the other two mages with this being part of the reason, though they might also take Monks spot alongside Dragoon and Ninja for not sharing gear.

Well, NIN stats were added to MNK gear that was pre-NIN so that is more of an convenience exception than anything.
