Um, no. Samurai who went to battle always donned full body armor. Although not the kind we know in the west. The samurai you're referring to are those who are on RnR and happened to be strolling in town with a katana in their obi. Which was one of the samurai privileges to wield a katana in a town

Eagerly anticipating my close range melee caster with positionals. If it does turn out to be a Sword Wizard I'll laugh.

yeah I am actually not a fan of this aesthetic they chose for samurai, but im gonna guess that they want to keep the shogun look for a tank probably later on, doesnt really make sense that theyd go into dungeons almost naked, when they did wear armor in battle times

as far as monk gear goes, im thinking itll be alot like how nin was and share gear till 60. But then again, a lot of monk garb doesnt really seem to fit samurai. Theres even a ninja set from CT the fuma set that would just look very odd on a samurai...

Well, I can sort of understand why they went for this look. Samurai served a master till their death - Normally anyway. When said samurai lose favor or privileges of their master, they become "masterless" or ronins. Which were wandering samurai with no master and this does fit a samurai with adventuring in mind. These wandering samurai were more likely to be found wearing the more traditional Japanese clothing as displayed in the trailer.

Glad they went with the robed look. Was never crazy about the classic Samurai armor.

Real excited to see how it plays.

^ pretty much yeah, real life lore wise thats spot on

in game technical, most samurai in videogames (an anime i guess) is always shown with their common/wandering/ronin clothes too so i think SE just take whichever is more "common" to viewers

Judging primarily from the brief notes, but also partly from the animations released thus far, it looks a bit duller than I had hoped.

Casting isn't generally something I want to see on my melee, especially if the release doesn't come with burst movement.

Um, no, again. Sorry. As a little history tour, the kind of samurai you have in mind were in Tactics Ogre (weren't even called Samurai in here), Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Bravely Default. These had traditional Japanese (casual) clothing. The more heavily armored, ready for battle, iteration kind of samurai were in: Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Returns. There were some grey-area samurai. They weren't explicitly mentioned as one, but were received as one. For example Auron from Final Fantasy X. A majority of the games belonging to Square-Enix donned themselves in Japanese styled (full-body) armor or parts of it the very least. Even in the more recent game like For Honor (not belonging to Square-Enix) the samurai all participate in combat fully armored. If you'd search for some images on google for "Samurai in games" you'd notice the greater share of the images display samurai in armor. Not in their casual clothes. The lightly armored samurai isn't even common in videogames. That kind of samurai is the type romanticized by Hollywood - Or what I call them, at least.

That aside, I'm glad they went for the "historically" correct aesthetics for this. Considering the player characters are adventurers. Historically in quotes, because if they actually went for the absolute correct one only the most rich adventurers who are also nobility would be samurai. And none of us would be sporting a katana and we'd be shooting arrows on horseback instead.

So, I know SAM is going to be STR based, but could someone direct me to where they said they'd be sharing actual gear with MNK? And is there any clarification if they mean "All gear ever will be shared" or just "Stuff that's in game now" will be shared, like they did with NIN?
