I would love to see many versions of this idea. An island, a cave network, a massive airship. Sky is the limit really. I stand by the idea that a mix of both neighborhoods and instance housing is what we need.

OP's idea, and this right here is why, imo, we should move to instanced housing (I read your part about both heh lol). SE has so many places that would make drop dead gorgeous locations/backdrops, but we're limited to fixed areas that cannot even hold the entire server (they fall flat on meeting demand). Although I feel bad when suggesting the system because I know it sort of kills the old content, however I do think you could make the current housing districts for players who want it OR make it WoW's garrison system for FC but on serious crack. I just don't think besides players who REALLY want a neighborhood that the system could even compare to the power and options of an instanced system, like meanwhile daddywarbucks is building an airship dock while you're still stuck at your medium sized plot and 2 gardens.. Instance system's end game power is massively greater than that of the current neighborhood system, justification to keep it as is would diminish significantly as time passes.
Instance systems are just more powerful - if used in its fullest, allowing for far greater options, and meets demand better, all you lose is your personal house being networked - which as more people move to an instanced system makes the reason less relevant, your FC location still has community too, and you could even make ways to network within your FC via certain objects (like a door that travels between your own area and your FC's community hub).
On the FC adopts a district thing: For those unfamiliar with Garrison, perhaps think Dark Cloud, and those unfamiliar with that basically its a node based city builder that gives you significant buffs based on how you upgrade and place people, so you FC could bolster and unlock some impressive buffs to their airship cannons by upgrading their blacksmith for example. So you could keep the current district ideas for FC as a massive upgrade content FC could upgrade and design, a big fat group project. It wouldn't consume that much data as one may think because you'd use node and building type system (FC makes node 15 = blacksmith level 2. Node 30 = NPC(3, tier(2)) - like the Garrison/Dark Cloud systems).
Totally +1'd the OP idea, but hopefully this sort of idea leads into more than just an island for FC - but a whole new world (sings), because I've been dreaming for your comment Erik since SE said "housing" years ago. I want a small chocobo farm (even if it doesn't function as a farm, but just appears as such), a Vivi BLM village, or a crazy FC group project like building a giant airship that functions as a base - things possible if they went instanced (Wildstar+ system).
Oh yeah you had the island AND your own room. I miss my moogle![]()

This would be so cool! I'd really like it

Im down with this idea, its sad the only things you can do in a housing district is shop, craft, beat up a dummy or RP/idle. It would be loads more interesting to be able to walk a few yalms away and start chopping wood. Hell and advanced idea could be to be able to plant certain trees that will become that type of wood node after a period of time, etc among other things. Would really bring a FC together

They added personal islands to XI called Mog Gardens in Seekers of Adoulin. You can do almost everything the OP listed in their suggestion there like fish (both fresh and salt water), gather plants and minerals, garden, rear monsters, and scavenge for things on the shore (you don't even need equipment or skill points to do these things and you can hire NPC-assistants to handle all those things for an IRL-week). You can't build a house but you can teleport there via your mog house or rent-a-room and can access all your mog house options (that aren't furniture related).
You can now also add a second floor to your Mog House. :B
I love this idea! Not only does it provide housing for more players, it will also actually utilized the teamwork aspect of workshop which SE intended for but didn't quite workout. Also since it's completely instanced, upgrading of housing size should be feasible unlike what we have now. I think it might be a little late to implement it for 4.0 now but I wish they could work on this for the next major housing update sometime in the future.
