*Pulls whole room and promptly dies.*
Player: WTF!? Why didn't you heal me?? You suck as a healer, especially for a Mentor!
    Mentor: .... /facepalm
had this happen yesterday , I thought I screwed up but I looked and the level 50 blm had on a level 37 ring dont even think it was a tank ring either, level 55 belt, level 70 something else it was the 50 roulette but still shouldnt of started with a big pull. If Im the healer and I have only 400 less hp than you something isnt right, also wasnt using darkside, but as a mentor I just dont know what to say in these type situations.

Honestly, I've only run into one or 2 "bad" mentors. One was a healer that sh*t talked our WAR in Praetorium for daring to slow down and teach the mechanics of the dungeon to the 5 newbies in the party, and was generally more interested in being a nuisance than contributing. Ironically, WAR was doing mentor-healer's job in this instance.

The other was someone lvling GLD in Tam Tara. By itself I wouldn't complain, but the fact that we tried to explain where to get proper tank gear (you'd think they would at least know that DEX gear is worthless), why flash is important, etc etc... Just... don't wear the mentor crown when you are playing something you have no idea how to play, you know? And their response to our advice? "Sorry, but can you not? I just want to finish the run." Well we're not gonna freaking finish the run if my squishy caster self keeps tanking. >.>

But! On the flip side, I've had lots of mentors that really helped me out throughout the game. My first run of Sastasha (my first MMO, my first dungeon, I was nervous as hell), My friend and I queued in as THM/ROG. We got a mentor PLD, saw we were both sprouts and asked healer if she was ok with a full run of the place (her words "/shrug I follow the tank."). She explained why I needed to be using my Fire II spell for AOE (I had only done solo content until then, and AOE is pretty much suicide if you don't have someone to keep them off you, so I was just instinctively ignoring the spell... ;u; ). Looking back from a more experienced perspective, I appreciate a lot more how much patience that run must have taken. I'm pretty sure we were in there for a good 40 minutes. @_@ Which for me and my friend, everything was still new and exciting, but for someone who can probably run it with their eyes closed? Yeah that was probably the worst LOL. Makes me sad because I didn't know about commendations at the time.

The mentors in our novice network helped me find my first FC (in the end it didn't work out for me, but I made some good friends), and really whenever I end up in a first-time run of something with a mentor, they do their part, explaining mechanics, etc. But really, when mentors shine is with newbies.

So yeah, I guess that's my 5 cents worth. Unfortunately, the reality is that a couple bad encounters can sour an otherwise good reputation, especially when it happens periodically.

I had a blm mentor that rushed ahead and pulled mobs. Tank said to let him pull instead. Mentor goes bananas in chat and proceeded to pull everything.
First boss fight, blm does a /sit the entire battle. Next boss, the mentor refused to enter the arena, just sat right outside the ring. He got kicked from the group. Then proceeded to whisper all of us how he was going to report us for abusing the kick system.
I cringe every time I see a crown. They tend to act like babies.

You seem to be noticing the bad ones while passing by the unnoticeable ones. There's a lot of mentors out there, and when one simply does his job (that is, plays the game, not strictly mentoring) you have not much to say about them. When one does bad, you associate it with an icon and are basically conforming to a confirmation bias.
You have every right to cringe but a couple of bad apples doesn't spoil the bunch. What you experienced was a bad player, not specifically a bad mentor. His mentor status has nothing to do with the situation.

My theory is based on sales. Recently, with Steam sales, I've seen tons of newbie AuRa. This sudden backlash (in the west anyway, dunno about JP and other eastern countries) I'm going to guess is a result of the Christmas/New Years sales. All those new people have made mentor status now. Also, this game is T for Teen. When going into the Novice Network, some could be expecting level headed adults, but you could very well be getting emotionally strung teenagers and fresh out of high school college students who think they know the world better than anyone because they're in college now.

I agree with everything except the last sentence, acting like that blm is something a mentor should not do ever. That being said yeah there are mentors that don't do their jobs, but they are a vast minority. Prob is that they are the ones to get remembered. As a mentor if i am pressed for time or need to catch up on my personal stuff i take the crown off. I have also seen on threads where ppl say that non mentors are more helpful but don't stop to think that we don't have the crown on 24/7 and that person could have been a mentor.
I have called out other mentors in instances for douchebaggery several times myself and understand how ppl are a little biased, hell i get worried every time i see a tank with a potd wpn.
I have also been bitched at for things that are just silly, for instance not explaining mechs in dun scaith on patch day as if we get cheat sheets for day 1 content lol. And everyone has different ideas on what a mentor should be doing, I myself don't think I should have to baby step you thru your rotation at i230, you may not know the instance we are in, but you need to have a working understanding of your job at that point.

Ironically it has nothing to do with being a mentor itself, it's just players who already have bad attitudes towards noobs then become mentors & STILL have their bad attitudes towards noobs. And since they have the mentor crown, people expect them to help when they don't want to...this is just the kind of world we live in. Like a teacher who hates kids, they exist too.
