I don't know much about the mentor system, but could this just be case of 'little bro hopped on my account'?

If that was the case, it really wouldn't matter what the requirements are.

This is entirely possible. Though I feel like if I were to let my friend/sibling who doesn't often play the game, I would warn the party - especially if I were to run around with a "mentor" icon or anything that signifies that I know what I am doing.

The other possibility is that they bought the account.

Well yes, but like I said earlier - in this case (and many other cases I am sure) it seemed less about someone just being bad, and more about someone being "new". This player did not seem innately bad, they just didn't really know what they were doing. Bad players generally at least try to dodge AoE for example instead of just standing there. It was more the fact they seemed oblivious to basic mechanics of the game.

I agree. Like I said before I don't know much about the mentor system, but it is just so odd based on the requirements to be a mentor that the simplest of mechanics and job performance were shot from this player. It just doesn't add up.

I have grouped with quite a few mentors, and even the ones that were jerks still knew which direction faces up. They are more likely to be elitist asshats than noobs. One time I had a healer with a mentor icon who spammed medica throughout the entirety of Halatali, constantly taking hate from a sprout tank. The thing is though, he knew what he was doing and admitted it. Stating, "What better way to learn how to tank than to get hate back from those that take it." He totally took advantage of how forgivable the training dungeons are, but during the process made the new tank feel totally inadequate. We ended up kicking him; a mentor.

So that was a case of a player having an extensive knowledge of the game, and knowing what could be ignored. The mentor the OP describes though, seems to be clueless, and I can only conclude that someone else was playing the owner's account, and probably without their knowledge. Because of this possibility, I feel the requirements don't need to change and it was just a matter of really bad luck for the OP.

what constraints would you put on further for mentors? Not that it matters to me I got a returning Vet status, and just continued to talk in the NN as I did months ago as a mentor, but besides all of that, considering jump potions becoming a thing, all you need is 300 comms which isnt so easy to get as a dps, but not as hard as the other two roles. I only say this, because its absolutely the oppositte trend i see when i get comms, I usually do better as a dps, who can type to the party more frequently and just have fun. So do the comms need an increase? should it be 2 dps(would be marginally better if it isnt just brd/mch or maybe better yet 1 melee 1 ranged) the types of quests completion wont be a thing, since the potions will remove that completely, so now itd have to be based on experience. And in bad players cases, comms most likely being the biggest gate. But they are partial to any number of variables outside of sheer skill. In fact bad players can get alot of comms for just being people people and making the run enjoyable....so where would you draw the lines? Mentors dont necessarily have to be top raiders, they just have to have a good understanding of roles, interaction and willingness to help newer players get into the game and be more efficient at getting to their goals.
