Just recently, I've been looking into this, and was wondering from anyone who has been in this, what its like.

Super fast queue times even for dps (because even PUGs have no game-enforced role combinations), good way to level up, learn your job skills before unlocking them, and even get a high ilvl weapon, but if your party wipes once, your entire progress for that set of 10 floors is lost.
Short sum up of it anyway.
"Ul'dah can keep their dusty markets, and their streets paved in silver and gold.
Limsa Lominsa keep your pirates, and your ships covered in musty mold.
My loyalty lies with Gridania, with the Moogles and the tree spirits of old." -The Forky Conjurer
It's extremely fast for leveling, but because everything dies in 1-2 hits, there is no way to actually learn proper mechanics of the class you are leveling.
It's generally fun to do, with traps and treasure and transformations and can be surprisingly exciting and dangerous if you get a difficult match-up (since there are no restrictions in place in terms of roles, so you can end up with 4 tanks on a boss that needs to be burned down quickly, or without a healer on a floor with heavy-hitting opponents.
If you clear floor 50/100, you get potshards, which can be traded in for tier 5 materia, so there's that. And as Seig already said, ilvl 235/255 weapons for your job of choice.
Floor 101+ are generally harder and 180+ can be a nice little challenge for 4-man parties
Lots of nice glamour gear and even a unique mount you can get from there, although it's RNG-based, so that might get frustrating.
Also, those floors can only be accessed by not wiping a single time with that specific party from 50-100, and if you ever fail above 100, you have to start all the way back at 50 again.
So yeah. PotD is very rewarding, not too hard, quick to do and generally fun, but can be really punishing if you mess up.
Fast que, different layout every time.
I just got into it to level my paladin a few days ago, I'm enjoying it.
probably one of the best content added to the game during 3.X.

How do I go beyond 100 in the first place, now I've cleared it?Floor 101+ are generally harder and 180+ can be a nice little challenge for 4-man parties

I've been going in with different parties throughout my time in there, so I will need a fixed party right from the beginning again?
By a premade party, you mean by jobskill setup or by player setup?
Where does soloing fit in?
The party composition does not matter, as long as you do floors 51-100 with the same people as a fixed party. You need to clear these floorwithout a single KO to unlock the higher floors. If you wipe, it's back to 51 again.
I dunno about soloing PotD, I think it gives you some titles.
It seems that I have to start all over again, as I can't do anything else. The parties I was with, have never been wiped, but I've been KO in the process through the floors.
