Nope, I like the chaos of an active neighborhood and the greater chaos of new wards being added and the land rush that ensues. The only thing that would make it more fun is if for an hour after the servers come up, when wards have been added, is if all the residential areas become pvp zones.

If we go pvp mode it has to be no respawns and a lockout timer until the hour's up. Last man standing.
Hmm a small number of people having neighbors vs. everyone has the chance to get a house. Really as a home owner myself its sad that some want others to miss out just so they can have neighbors. :/ Anyway they could still make one or two not instanced housing zones for FC only where you can have your neighbors. Win Win imo.
I mean there are so many ways to have instanced housing and still have some neighbors. They could even make some kind of "entrance land" where people have to go to get to their house. This could be a nice meeting place with the neighbors. SE just need to be more creative when it comes to such a thing.
Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.
I guess none of you 2 ever played EQ2 ?
The houses were instanced but the neighborhoods was not, pretty much the same thing they did with appartement in fact.
1 residential area and in this area 10 houses for instance. The outside was open, so you could see you neighbors but each house's inside was an instance and no restriction on the number of "houses" can could be created
Plus, if you want to keep the ablity to decorate a garden make it a back garden or the instance "door" at the entrance of the zone, or (and my favorite) give us the ability to make a winter garden in the house *.*
(I know, I know, my eyes too are bleeding but remember it's a grand'pa MMO, be respectfull !)
This system prooves us we can solve the housing crisis and keep living neighborhoods
Sadly I don't think it's a lake of creativity but more the fact they don't want to admitt they screwed that part and instead hide behind "it's exclusiv" because they know this will make players owning a house "specials" :/
(not everyone of course, but some defenitly acted that way when housing was released and "homless" were asking to SE why they did it he way they did)

People don't know how to take criticism anymore, and bad play is rewarded with with a coddling mentality. Yes, this is a casual game for the most part - that doesn't mean people need to walk on eggshells in fear of getting reported for pointing out things. This whole 'please don't say anything even slightly negative' mentality that we seem to be going towards and the devs seemingly pushing towards it is creating a disturbing trend.

I've agreed with that, all along. I'm all for the new area they're adding being instanced, but existing housing being moved would be a real bummer. I've made more friends through the housing wards than anywhere else.
As for the instanced houses with non-instanced neighborhood area, how much use could that possibly hope to see? I have yet to see anyone else in the apartment lobby. People would just go straight to their houses, as with apartments, and that area would be empty.

Sorry, but I'm confused as that's exactly how we have it now. The neighbourhood (ward) is a zone, but each house inside it *is* an instance when you go into it (which is apparently also why we get chucked outside our house every time we do something else/logout). The problem as I understand it is the number of wards/zones that exist and are always active (72 per server, 4608 in total).
Are you saying that in your example there's basically only 1 ward for the entire housing and those 10 houses are all for show/not actually specific to anyone?
Exactly, they are used to create a neighbourhood but are just "entrance" to your own housing instance, so we have both living neighbourhood and housing for everyone
Pretty much like the dungeons entrance spot ^^
