The problem is OP is that our classes are weapon focus. so using a crossbow for a Bard or Mechanist would be taking away from future classes. Classes are very much weapon focus that it could ruin the identity of that class as well.
To twist this discussion I would like to see job focus weapons in design. 3.5 Anima did not do this for most classes and it was concerning.

Yoshi-P did hint once he would like to make the weapon restrictions more lax (ie 2 hand axes dual wield axes etc for war) but it might be a while before they do something like this and it would more than likely just be aesthetic. I could see it happening for no other reason that it would give em more headroom for art assets though.

think garleans already use gun weaponry :PNon-Ridged Weapons would be cool: Whips, Meteor Hammers, Chains etc
I know in the old 1.0 Data mining they did find hints of a whip user. Quistis!
Only thing I hope is they never introduce gun blades that the player can use... such a stupid weapon.
Switching out weapons with others like Bow for Crossbow would be cool. Just remember that each additional weapon adds a cluster of new animations for each race/gender. It is doable just expensive, and I know their team is not terribly big.

crossbow would for ranger is that would be a future job. i not planned on give it to bard or mach
as i believe that whip should bst job though in ffxi bst use a hand axes and sheild
i also think be cool have dancer use fans
no two weapon per job
