that, my friend, is the exact definition of a gil sink. you do not give the gear to the npc losing money over what you spent, but you blow up the gear and materia and have nothing at all to show for it.
A gil sink is intended to combat inflation by removing gil from the game. By taking gil out of the game, you decrease the ratio of gil to items, thus keeping the rate of inflation down.

The scenario you describe has the opposite effect- it increases the ratio of gil to items in the game, thereby increasing the rate of inflation.

not once you take into account during the selling of the same item multiple times you are removing gil. i know some people don't realize, but you do have taxes. each time you blow up an item you take 5% of the price you paid out of the market.

you make item and i buy it for 100k

gil leaves the game from taxes.
i blow up the item and buy another for 100k
i pay taxes again so more gil goes out of the game.
you do that many times for each item and you do remove gil from the game.

it's not as fast as people would like, but it doesn't change the fact that it does leave.

Using the fact that anyone who joins at 2.0 behing so far behind as a reason for anything is pretty much null.

Lets face it, people who join today are behind those who joined at launch
People who join next week will be behind those who join today.

Time will always always always play the advantage to you since youll have played more and have had more time to gather resources.

Adding more gil sinks to the game isnt a bad idea, but even then, those who join then will be behind those who are in now since we will be able to use said gil sinks to our advantage, and so on

Gil should be wiped. I have a friend who has well over 50 million. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it, but he'll have the levels to earn it back with crafting. Same for battle classes.

Just a personal opinion. Gear I'd like to keep, and my levels. AND MY NAME. Screw gil.

However, there are some very pressing issues with the way data will be transferred with the little knowledge that we do know. My focus is on the gear and money transfer.

What we know: Yoshi has said that there are no promises to what degree the gear will remain, but has mentioned that we will keep our items and gil when our character data is transferred to the new servers.

Gil Problems: We already have an influx of gil on servers. If 2.0 is supposed to help bring in new players, why do we get to keep our gil? Sure we can say we earned our gil, but this is NOT 2.0! Everyone keeping their gil come 2.0 will only widen the gap between old and new players. I know people can say this happens in the life cycle of a game and during expansions, but this is neither. Another benefit is that it will help destroy RMT even if temporarily when they lose their storage of capped gil. I will be sad to lose all my gil. I'm sure crafters and day 1 players will rage and throw a temper tantrum but it is for the good/life of the game if we all start with 0 gil come 2.0

Gear: Gear somewhat suffers a similar issue. If gil was to be eliminated people would simply convert all their savings into items/gear. On this point I think it is okay for them to transfer gear as a way to display unique items we obtained for staying with FF14. At the same time I think that all gear pre 2.0 should not retain the NPC price it has currently. All the gear should receive the same sale price that unique / non-transferable items get~ 1 gil. With this method again people will not be able to destroy the new economy but retain items that are worth using or hold sentimental value to them.

Side note: With all the class/job changes we can't even say come 2.0 that we leveled from 1-50 and learned our classes. A majority will have learned it at 50 and not progressively. I would like to say these should be reset as well, but then we face the issue of players leaving until 2.0. In my gaming career I have not seen a game start fresh ever. Most games that flop fade out of existence and the company moves onto a new project. However, if possible I think I could tolerate only allowing one DoH, DoW/DoM, and DoL to be kept at capped level when 2.0 comes out so that the new players can have others to level with and so that the new content is experienced to the fullest by old players.

Now these are just thoughts I have had floating in my head. I am sure I will catch a lot of hate. Most likely from old players, rich players, and all 50 players. But if we were to stop and think about the health of the game we play and the future it holds, it is in our best interest to ensure that the transfer to 2.0 comes with the greatest chance at a successful relaunch. I mean think about it this way. If our gear had no value and we had 0 gil perhaps the materia system and future gear could become better. Because if we look at it right now, the materia system is actually there to help us get rid of excess gil but is negated by coffer drops and crafters. This is not a petition of any sorts, but hopefully I can view how others feel about this impending situation.
I could see an issue where if majority of the players have everything to 50, new players would really be mainly playing with new players. If the new players slowly trickle in then there may be too few of the new players for the other new players to play with, which might make them wish to quit the game with there not being anyone to play with and all ^^.

Theres always going to be new players, and those players will have 0 gil and 0 armor. You start playing any MMO thats been out for a long time and there will always be a gap from your money and gear compared to people who have been playing longer. Your making it sound like this has never happened to you and something bizarre.
