Daddy of Light (FFXIV TV Drama)

This sounds like it could be a great show. Here's hoping that Crunchyroll or Netflix pull a streaming license for it.

It looks like the West will get it this fall

Final Fantasy 14: Daddy of Light, a live-action, Japanese TV drama featuring Square Enix’s multiplayer online game, is coming West. Netflix picked up the show for international audiences, and Daddy of Light is expected to premiere worldwide this fall.

I think they said in another source that it'll be 'Dad' of Light rather than 'Daddy' I rather they use 'Father' but that's just me

That's what localization is for lol, like literally this is their job. Daddy of light sounds unappealing, Father of Light sounds much better - imo. It's true daddy sounds cute, but unless this targets the "cute" audience Father would probably target better. I suppose it depends on the content. Daddy also has some other takes on the word that are far worse than "cute" as well, but since the cover picture will show up with it the thought should be banished fairly quickly.

This is the type of localization I'd expect from the 90's.
It just sounds like immaturity people associating it with perversion, unless the father and son are playing on Balmung I don't expect the content of the show to be anything suggestive.

Just because they use English doesn't mean it's good to go here, I've seen so many English named products in Asian countries that would utterly fail in the west (in their brand/slogan/ad, makes no sense or sounds bad), but the important thing is they didn't use the English for us they used it for them and so it isn't meant to target us when they use it (so our feelings are irrelevant - also many of the ones I can think of have west targeted products too but they use of course different approaches then). Which also means its probably off culturally, or sometimes literally lol (but again, it wasn't made for us). However, also important the version to be shown to us for us to consume would make sense to then take our thoughts in consideration - then the thought to slightly localize becomes valid (in general just for understanding purposes, I would dissuade changing things just to change them*). *People may take this conversation onto FFXIV, in which case I would add ours is a bit different than a normal localization and can be considered far more original source since they are released at the same time and our English team works in tandem with the Japanese team (I'm okay with changes in this case because I don't see FFXIV Japanese as the original, to me the English version is just as much the original).

Tl;dr The name is effectively in Japanese still and titles being translated to hook the audience in is a natural step not only in the 90s but still now. It's an important step, and to literally translate every foreign product would just mean their failure most often (because literal translations are generally bad).

well, back when they first announced this during the JP fanfest live letter it WAS called Father of Light in English on the slide. Also didn't they actually change the title to Dad of Light recently?

I get the feeling people are afraid to click on the thread because they expect some kinky stuff in it...xD

If that would be true, trust me this thread would have more views and responses. Daddy of light sounds just plain out boring to me, but defiantly not kinky.

When your child is like 5, it's cute. This guy's son is in his teens, and even then, late teens. That isn't cute.
