Not to belittle you, but if you just capped your primary class and have been playing since beta and you've been playing "Hard" all year as you claim, then you're doing it wrong.

I made friends with a newbie this week who has managed to hit 50 within 7 days, and thats not all the fast either.

Don't listen to this guy, Just because it took you a long time to level, doesn't mean you aren't playing hard. Like myself I appreciate people that take the time to enjoy what the game has to offer instead of blazing through what they "have to" leaving out the "don't need to" complaining about end game, and the lack of content. You are what this game needs, not more elitist at end game with out all the available content done.

I only said this because he claims to have a wealth of MMORPG experience.

FFXIV's combat classes are not hard to level in by any measure.

Just because one know's how to level efficiently, doesn't mean you don't take time to enjoy the view.

I also gave him some advice as to how he may pertain a placement in Ifrit Hard mode.

Can you say the same?
