is there a way to play ffxiv on pc without buying game again?

A few things to note about playing on both PC and PS4:

1) As others have said, yes you need to buy a copy of the game (+ expansions) for each system you want to play on.

2) You do NOT need to pay multiple subscription fees. And any character on your account on the PS4 will be available on the PC as long as you activate the PC key properly. Make sure you do not set it up as a new subscription but instead add it to the current one.

3) Any pre-order, CE, bonus keys you've claimed will also be available on the other system. So no need for extras there.

4) May be a good time to wait for that complete edition coming out with the expansion so you can get Base + Heavensward + Stormblood all together for PC.

Another thing worth noting is that your settings dont transfer over. They're stored on your PS4, and not SE's servers. So when you move over to the PC, you'll have all your UI and other settings at their default settings. You could always take a screenshot of your UI in game on your ps4, and then use that as a guide to get everything set up properly again on pc. You'll still have access to the game on ps4 once you purchase the pc license.

That's certainly an option, but if their new PC is more powerful than their PS4 (easily possible), they may want to experience the game with what their PC has to offer, rather than just switch from their TV to a PC monitor (and at a smaller resolution than on their TV, with quality at the mercy of their internal network bandwidth).

Clarification to forestall nitpickers (and yes, I appreciate the irony): You won't be able to play your existing characters without the PC license. You would be able to play the trial via a new account, which caps at level 20.

I beg to differ, once you have an account and sub you can play anywhere. The only reason you've gotta buy the PS version is because there is No download. Honestly just google ffxiv client and play

I eventually ended up purchasing heavensward separately on PC and Mac and PS3 - even though I had it on PS4, and even though I have a single Mac that I boot into macOS and Windows. Without the platform-specific expansion license I couldn't even log in if I had logged out in Ishgard!

In contrast, FFXI used a single expansion registration which unlocked the expansion on all platforms. I wish SE would switch to that system for FFXIV as well - it would be much nicer for multiplatform players!
