I'm not much for PvP myself. I play the non-competitive modes a bit when new things are on the vendors but that's about it.
I can understand SE's thinking with the chat restriction. Back when the Feast was introduced I played the 8v8 mode for a bit hoping to get a Fenrir pup. I saw new healers verbally abused when they didn't do well (go get cancer, uninstall ect) which was pretty shocking to me for an unrated mode and certainly wasn't helping them perform better in battle. I assume the chat restriction along with the GARO event and frontline freelancer being added this patch are all part of a concentrated effort by SE to grow the PVP community by making it more appealing to newcomers.

My biggest problem with no chat in the Feast is that I don't believe the premade phrases are an appropriate replacement. As many have said there aren't enough phrases to cover every situation. As a controller player I'm also not thrilled by the idea of putting a dozen more buttons on my bar and trying to find them in a hurry (granted typing mid battle isn't easy for me either).

A more ideal solution would be to leave chat unrestricted but crack down harder on players reported for repeated inappropriate behavior. At the very least I think pre-match chat should be unrestricted to make it easier to discuss strategy and I don't see the need for the premade party competitive modes to have a chat restriction at all.
