Anyone disappointed with the new Red Mage asthetics?

Now, im not one to complain about things, i love this game and the dev team, they do an amazing job at listening to their players, and making this game great. I was SUPER pumped to hear Red Mage will be coming! Finally a sword wielding dps.

But i have to admit i was really bummed when i saw how it has that stupid floaty thingy

I feel like it totally takes away from the fact that the Red Mage is a sword using melee dps. Yes they use magic too...but i dont want it coming from that magic turret. I wish they wouldn't have added that thing, and just kept the rapier sword. Im not a magic or ranged user in games? i like melee, i love how they made the moves look, i love how fast they are...but i really dislike the floaty magic thing...i hope they have the option to make it invisible or swap it out for a second sword. Thats how i feel anyways. If they dont ill keep holding out for a true sword wielding dps off Gladiator. *fingers crossed*

You do realize that Red Mage is not a melee dps ? They said it was a ranged dps.

I think it looks great and is a good way of solving the argument between those who say a RDM should wield rapiers/sabers and those who say it should wield staves. Now it does both. Plus, the hat is amazing. Seems like a very stylish job.

As I've said before, they could have gone with a different stance instead of the Agrippa-style fencing stance they went with. If they had gone with something like Capo Ferro, you wouldn't need to have a floating gem, but the gem would instead be held in the offhand (which is kept near the chest). Capo Ferro is actually meant to allow use of the offhand, whereas that Agrippa stance generally isn't.

Something that bugs me is that the gem is "sheathed" on the right hip instead of next to the blade. It not only looks awkward but seems rather impractical. You could have had the sword sheathed on the left hip and the gem right next to it, so you draw with your right hand as you grab the gem with your left.

Opinions and all, but AST's weapon animations look lame (I don't like floating weaponry), but I do know why they went that way. The spheres are based on astrolabes, which are generally held in place by a stick of sorts. It'd look too much like a club or a staff if they had gone with that, hence the floating weaponry.

At that point I'd have to ask, why bother to even have a sword in the first place?

If the sword and magic mix with each other the way you'd expect of a fighter mage, I won't complain. If the gameplay is bullshitty rush in to melee then rush out to cast, then it's an objectibly terrible design (because you're not using mobility to avoid attacks or close distances, but because the gameplay requires you to rotationally use them).

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.

No, I'm not disappointed with the new Red Mage aesthetics. Red Mage is a spellcaster.

I'm only disappointed in the aesthetics of that outfit, specifically for females. We don't get the classic look and instead get some poofier, frillier version which I found rather upsetting, lol. But mechanically the rapier into staff was I thought a pretty clever maneuver on their part. Rare for them. :V

I like the Magicked Medium Crystal (I believe that's what its called). Its something a little new, and I like the way it combines with the sword.

As others have said, Red Mage is classified as a ranged caster DPS. It'll engage in some melee DPS for sure, but my guess is the scales tip towards damaging from range. I also like the outfit. Looked fairly iconic to past Red Mages, though the ensemble to me seems to suggest Sharlayan roots, which, makes sense as far as lore goes. So, overall, I like what we've seen of Red Mage so far.
