Too bad that's FFXI though. It may be completely different in FFXIV knowing they already change what work in FFXI and put it in FFXIV.I know this because I have actually used Level Sync in FFXI.
Level Sync (and FFXI in general) has a feature called Equipment Scaling, in which your higher level equipments stats gets reduced to the appropriate power level when you are level synced. This feature was specifically made to address the problem of carrying multiple gear sets for every possible level. So you could wear your AF armor while level synced in a lower-level party and still get stat bonuses on par with that synced-down level. When you leave the party, the level sync goes away and your equipment returns to its normal uber-stats.
Now I will grant you that in most situations a HQ version of the level appropriate gear gives slightly better stats than synced-down high-level gear. But it is certainly not to the point where the synced-down high-level gear would be considered "gimp" or "nerf".
