Before XIV came out as a a pile of....stuff, I used to think that the skills and spells are learned from weapons like in IX.

I don't know what made me think that was the case, probably because a lot of the key designers of XIV worked on IX too.

I'm sort of sad that's not the case. My weapon and gear is such a pain to take care of that if I could learn permanent skills through continuous use I'd feel like my weapon is worth fixing every now and then. It should give me something back for being so high maintenance.

It would also make me want to use gear that matches my own level and even lower level gear if I found out there are some skills for my job to be learned from that weapon.

I've recently found this addicting system in PSP game called Y's SEVEN and I remember Grandia 2 having a similar system that let's the player to get all skills to five stars if they are used several times.

The way the current skills just plop out of nowhere doesn't make me feel like I've really earned them in any way.

Even better would be the fact that people could equip specific gear sometimes for some very hard fights because of the temporary skill they get from that item. Also you could know what the pt member has by just looking at his weapon.

I hope SE someday returns to the system in IX in some form. It's one of the reasons I still think of it as one of the greatest games ever made.
