I like it. I abbreviated their names, but I still know who is talking because of the numbers.

This is most likely it, well in two ways, Cross-Server Party Finder would have an issue where if My name was Jack Smith and another player was also Jack Smith and we were in the same party, it would be difficult to know which Jack Smith was talking.
The numbers make more sense than to have Jack Smith(Hyperion): Say words here. . . and. . . Jack Smith(Excalibur) say words here.
They actually simplified the interface by using numbers since there was a time when they did show some mock screenshots of 2.0, they did have plans to show the world the player was on beside their name but thinking on it a number is a lot better.
It'd be more useful if everyone's party list displayed people in the same order like in B&S. As FFXIV's party list system is right now though, I don't find much use for the numbers in chat.
I don't find use to them either, but I assumed they were there in case you got people with duplicate names in your party, which is now possible with cross-server party finder.
It still seems kind of excessive to ALWAYS display them, just for the rare occasion when that happens .-.
I don't have a problem myself as my mind instantly ignores them. I rarely read the names anyway bc in many cases I'm in fast paced instances where it's easier to check the names above the characters instead of looking at the chat and then the party list to check what class that person is, in case they're saying something related to roles.
But I agree. We bought the game, we pay to have access to it. We should get as many options as possible to optimize our individual experiences.
