I had a similar issue with the game crashing whenever I tried to go to the mists at dusk or night, giving a ffxiv_dx11.exe error like seen in the first post.

Loading Dota2 made me realise I had XboxDVR activated, and that could impact performances ( even though I remembered trying to desactivate it because I don't want to use it. )

So for Windows 10 user having this error in specific spots, Try deactivating or removing XboxDVR from your computer to see if it solves the issue for you.

WARNING this'll deactivate the XBOX integration in windows 10 for the most part and may break other things.
Be careful and look up on the internet if you are in a slightly different situation, as if you actually use the Xbox App on your computer.
This is just a short guide to help people that do not use the xbox app and do not mind having it removed.

To do so, you'll need to open windows Powershell as administrator ( search it in the start menu)

    And then type in :
    Get-AppxPackage *xbox* | Remove-AppxPackage

This'll remove all app packages that contains "xbox" in its title from your windows applications. It'll also show some error as some can not be removed.
You can also look up the exact name of the XboxApp package to remove it using "Get-AppxPackage *xbox* ", but that didn't work for me when I tried to remove it individually.

After a reboot of your computer, xboxDVR shall be removed, as you can test by pressing Win+G.

This solved my "in the mists at night" crashes, hopefully it can help others and/or devs to isolate the issue.

I had this same issue, uninstalling the entire game and reinstalling (painful on my slow download speed) is what fixed it. It was the last resort, all the components in my PC are good and cleaned out all the drivers, seemed to be a corrupted data file perhaps (not a programming expert by any means). Hope that helps.

Am having same issue -- me too, very frustrated with chat support -- so finally "bit the bullet" and re-installed the game. They are doing maintenance tonight so won't know if it worked until after maintenance is completed. It happens whenever a character tries to enter or teleport to East Shroud on this one, and only then. All other chars (alts) seem to be fine as long as I keep them out of East Shroud on Malboro.

If IT needs the image of the last few things that were called before the crash, would be happy to provide.

I've been suffering the same issue. Some times I get a list of faulting files (Either dx11 or audio or nvd3 something). I reinstalled the game, I still had the same issues. Also closed all programs and useless services at the time of the test, even switched to dx9 and open the firewall, to no avail. I'm able to stay in the game from 1 to 10 minutes before a crash happens.

I'll try rerolling the drivers back a few. If that doesn't work, I'm going to reinstall my windows 7 and hope it clears every issue that I could have. I had that issue 2 years ago and it was fixed on another update, but now it seems that'll take a while. I still sent a support request to the center and waiting on their feedback with provided screens of the error messages.

Update: Rerolling doesn't change anything. Only option I have left is to reinstall Windows 7. Still, before doing that I'm gonna try the game on my laptop, see if I can reproduce the error.

Update 2: It seems to work on laptop, but due to specs issue, i'm t around 10 fps so can't check correctly. Currently hooking up with someone on the chat support.

Update 3: Chat Support did offer some interesting solutions, but to no avail. I'm gonna try reinstalling windows 7 tonight, see if it changes anything. (Also, is it me or do they try to get off your case rather quickly on chat support? It's like they're paid depending on how many clients they reply to. Oh and they can't receive any file while in chat, which cuts the possibility for support by a lot...)

This is not a fix, the problem shouldn't be considered as resolved. It's a way to get back into the game and being impatient enough that you can't wait for SE to fix their stuff. Only do this if you know what you're doing and backed up everything you care about. No game should ask you to redo the installation of an OS to be able to play it correctly.

Ok so I did the one thing I had saved as a last resort: Reinstalling Windows 7. Wiped my disks clean, resetted all the drivers, created new partitions and all that.

FF now is on a partition reserved for games instead of being on the same partition as the OS, which could've caused some interference with the game previously.

For Nvidia graphic cards user, I'm currently using the 352.86 version of the driver for GTX 970. If I'm not wrong, this driver dates back in late 2015-start of 2016. Maybe you can work something out on your side with a similar version of the driver. I didn't try upgrading the driver to the latest version since this could potentially be what causes the conflict, but I'll try one day.

Doing a wipe of W7 is a good and a bad thing. Good because it clears your system of everything you don't need/don't know you had (Like a virus or something hidden). The bad thing is you need to start all over again if you didn't do a backup save. This means reloading all updates, all programs and replacing all your files. It's tedious, takes about 4 hours. But the result might be worth it. Who knows.

I'll do more in-depth testing of the problem later, see if it's really the driver that was at fault or the program. Still, I highly suggest everyone starts removing programs they don't need and look around for unwanted/unneeded files before doing a wipe.

This is not a user error!

Brand new build: ASRock Z270 Mobo, DDR4 Corsair 3300 Mhz, Samsung 850 Pro SSD, GTX 1070 FTW GPU, 1300 Watt platinum Corsair PSU, Core i7 7700K CPU. No overlays, no third party software of any kind. Changing all the settings others have mentioned; clean installs etc etc etc. I can play for hours but eventually I'll get this same error.

It has nothing to do with NVidia or AMD as it happens across the board. PC components are not the factor either and Windows has had NO major updates since patch 3.55b. This is strictly an SE issue and needs to be addressed by same ASAP.

EDIT: the above added screenshot was all of 5 mins ago and I was standing idle in The Mist. It's 5 AM no one is online so it's certainly not an issue with population.

Chiming in with yet another DirectX problem. The one time I managed to get an error that wasn't Windows 10 unhelpfully telling me FFXIV was having problems and needed to quit, I got the following error codes:

The game has been unstable in both DirectX9 and DirectX11 flavors. It seems to be worst for me in cities-- I can roll for hours out in the world and I (cross my fingers) haven't had a problem with doing duties and other instanced content yet, but I'll be walking down the street in one of the cities and sometimes crash multiple times in a row before I make it to the other end of the road. When the DirectX crash happens is fairly random, but it especially seems to hate the in-game appearance customization screen, transitioning in or out of in-city cutscenes, and summoning my retainer. There are no warning graphical glitches or any kind of lag or framerate issues before the thing just quits and goes to black. I've done the dance with rolling back the graphics settings and making sure my card has the latest drivers, as well as some of the more unconventional fixes suggested here and elsewhere, but nothing seems to work for long.

I'm doing a fresh install to see if I just got unlucky with a corrupted file somewhere, but somebody is really sleeping on the job in the QA department for letting this bug drag on for so long. Some of the threads reporting this problem are over a year old!

Well the support center is bad at doing the job frankly. Only thing they told me is one of the 3 choices:

    1. Chat Support (Which is equally as bad)
    2. Follow the instructions on the Support Center (Which are the real basics of what you should do for any games.)
    3. Post on the forum (Which is here. And I didn't see a mod jumping in the thread saying they're looking into this.)

So don't expect much from them. If a fresh install doesn't work and you'd like to do like me, you could do a reinstallation of your os. Obviously, before doing so, make sure you backed up everything you need.

I'm getting these crashes as well. Sooooo annoying!

What makes the crashes even worse is they are so hard to diagnose.
All you get is a random set of numbers, there is no log file for the game and nothing pops up in the event viewer.
Along those random numbers, I've seen filenames like ntdll.dll, kernel32.dll and so on, but those are Windows files and I've ran "sfc /scannow" to check their integrity and they've been fine.

Above is a screenshot of my GPU stats and as you can see, they're all fine. Nothing to report, really.

I have reinstalled Windows several times (always making sure everything is up to date) and I've tried different versions of the GPU drivers. What more can I do?
