I know people in other parties can't comm me. It's still worth res-ing them though because it counts towards achievements.
Just die as Dragoon and someone will give you commendation.

Comms are a funny business, as a tank I tend to get one which I assume is from the healer. When I get more I assume it's from DPS who liked the speed at which I pulled but as some like to go fast and some like to go slow it's impossible to judge in DF. I don't do leveling roulette anymore as tank but it's easy to get loads simply by asking if they want a full run or not, I found when I did that the response was overwhelmingly in favour of a full run and most tanks I get do the opposite so they get no comm from me. I'm there for exp so why would I want to skip most of the mobs so you, as the tank, can get your roulette bonus ASAP? Brayflox's Longstop and Haukke Manor being the two biggest offenders here, especially if I've had to queue for 20+ minutes just to get in there.
As a DPS it depends on the DPS, on BLM I get loads, I put that down to BLM damage being really obvious with big fireballs and whatnot. I get a decent amount on both MNK and DRG but for some reason my NIN gets no love. The worst though is BRD, I sing my little heart out and can pew pew like a bad ass and get nothing. By the time I reached 60 on it I just found it funny as it seemed no matter how well I did nobody took a blind bit of notice.
As for handing them out I'm like many I suspect, if I'm tanking I tend to give it to the healer especially if they DPS pretty hard and keep up the healing, very comm worthy imo. As a DPS I give it to my partner in crime if they're not terrible, if they are I chose between healer and tank and rarely do I feel a party was so bad nobody gets one.

This is only half true. I've noticed lately that even if I run as a tank or healer, my brother who is running BLM always gets the comm.

The bulk of my commendations have actually come during 3.2, where I would endlessly queue up for Wiping Cities and save bad groups from dying as an AST. I find that in random faceroll content like expert, I get a fraction of the amount, simply because so little is really required of me (or anyone, for that matter).
My gist is, you'll stand out more performing well in content where people don't generally already perform adequately. I used to get a lot of comms doing well in Titan HM when i110 gear was the cap, as well (so back when DF pugs still struggled with it). Meanwhile, my co-healer in Syrcus Tower could be 100% afk and my teammates wouldn't notice a thing, and I'd get no comms. Of course, this is my healer-only perspective, so it's not like this advice is blanket technique for everyone.
I don't play tank but when I was doing sigmascape 1.0 before the part where you get the prey marker I accidently bumped into a ghost.I was hoping my co healer would take care of everyone but nope all she did was cast broil while I was watching the health bars go down. The only one that was alive was the tank as soon as I got out I rezzed the other healer popped whispering dawn so I could rezz the rest of our party while damage was going out.Eventually we made a recovery and finished and no lb3 wasn't up.It was hard doing it on low mana but anyway I get no commendation.I certainly did not give it to the scholar if she healed nobody would have died.

Comms are for when you wish to indicate that you liked the player for some reason. If you spend the instance critiquing another player, particularly in a way that they dont find helpful, you probably arent going to get the comm, surprise surprise. By the same measure, just being awesome and carrying the group MAY get you a comm, if you arent an A hole about it. For example, if the healer is good but is also a jerk about it (like being pushy or generally non communicative), I might hand the comm to a dps who I thought was earnestly trying hard, even if they weren't very good.
If you are super concerned about getting comms, which tbf dont mean much, I suggest communicating more. Also dont be that healer who literally asked for the comm after saying nothing for the entire instance

OP you should have just let yourself die. Then come back and explain the mechanics. Give out helpful hints and suggestions to the players.
They cant get better if you play the super tank and not make them realize their mistakes or how to get better. You literally made the run where their deaths or failures had no consequences on the group to where they thought they did pretty well since the group didnt wipe.
Lol it makes no sense.
I tanked fractal hard and did pig pulls, it was all very smooth and a fast run, got no comms.
Then did Kugane Castle and messed up some cool downs at some point and died and we had to start again and after was a smooth run (double pulled and everything) and got 2 comms.
Finally Shinryu normal, I was main tank, died suddenly and wasn’t sure what it was, was resurrected and continued to the end fine, got comms too.
Not sure what the reasons for both of those comms were, but was happy to get them![]()
