Should pre-HW fish still get away with 900 gathering?

I decided to pick back up Feast of Famine and try to beat it now that I am all geared out. I thought to myself "Hah, this will show those legendary fish who's boss!"

How wrong I was.

I hooked Kuno the Killer 3 times last night and he got away every time.
WITH 900+ GATHERING!!!

Do you think that this is reasonable for a fish that requires a minimum of 399 Gathering. I know its legendary but.. really?

since this is an RPG with gear progression, i don't think he should get away with 900 gathering.

when i pay millions for my new fisher gear, i expect to get something back for it.

the weathor conditions, double mooch and so on are still in place and it's still hard enough to catch the old fish, even with 100% catch rate.

All big fish have a maximum gather chance, meaning they all have the possibility of getting away!

Fishing is shady overall, it's been discussed countless times. At least for big fishing there seems to be an invisible cap in catching rate (15-20%??) so yea maybe you wasted your gil in melding gathering after all. Personally i did feast of famine with ~700 gathering with endoceras,nepto caught from first try. I had a lot of trouble with takitaro-namitaro but not to the point where i got despaired and of course helicoprion with the nope-weather. Other than that, the difficulty was rather expected as i already knew where i was stepping into lol.

It might seem ironic, but as fishing irl needs patience, this is the case here as well. So take it easy and you will get all of them eventually.

P.S: May i ask, how exactly you reached 900 gathering and what is your Perception and GP?

you can reach that amount of gathering/perception if you have full HQ pentamelded ironworks gear.

+ 37 with food
+ 10 with FC buff
= 866 Gathering

but however, that's not the topic. let's say the OP made a typo and meant 800+ gathering...

As Canadane said, ARR big fish have an upper limit for being gathered so fully melded Ironworks gear stats won't give you any more chance at landing over the Level 50 gear tbh, fishing is rng and it's a pain but it is what it is.

Yep. My fisher alt still goes after Ninja bettas. Just as many get away now as in 2.5.
