MMOs are basically a dead genre right now, because of the fact people want the same MMO over and over. There's a reason LoL is doing better than WoW, because it's not trying to become like WoW, it's doing it's own thing.
You can be standard while still being unique.

e: How are MMORPGs a dead genre? Are you crazy? And when was gaming crashing in America? Sources? Gaming has been growing at an exponential rate for the past several years in America, approaching the film industry in size.

e2: LoL is doing better than wow for several reasons. One being LoL appeals to hardcores, casuals, and has a substantial eSports following as well as Riot offering out 7 figure prize pools for tournaments. LoL is also F2P and only has 3 competitors, arguably 4, the 4th being Bloodline Champions. One of the 3 is too copy/paste for most people, one is very dated, and one is in a very restrictive beta. WoW is sharing the genre with a lot of different MMOs and in recent times these new MMOs have been successful. In addition, Starcraft 2 has been growing exponentially as well, so much of the PvP crowd from WoW has moved to more centric PvP games such as LoL or SC2. WoW is not dying, nor is the genre. On the contrary, conforming to standards has made the genre increasingly competitive.
