This game will most likly succeed in terms of eventully making SE money and being up and runing for 8-10yrs. It is square and their main IP. So tons of capital to throw at it to fix it and final fantasy which they will not let fail.

Now it will most likely never break 1mill subs, so it comes down to what is a success? The "1 million+ subs or the game sucks mentality" or the "Long lasting game with a stable playerbase mentality"

If they release 2.0 with everything they said it will have, and they have enough content where people do not get board. And they successfully have content for hardcore and casuals. Then the game will easily succeed if not be one of the better mmos on the market. But as for being hugly popular, this is XIV the worst mmo ever developed. That mentality alone will stop it from ever reaching its full potential.

ToR is nothing really special in it if you take away the voice acting. Feels like a standard western mmo to me honestly. Those that like that style and like starwars will love ToR, it is put together fairly well. For me I dislike western style mmo design, why I am against alot of what they are adding to XIV, and I am not a starwars fan so ToR is another Meh mmo to me. I would rather play WoW or Rift honestly if I had to play a current western game.

ToR, GW2, Tera, Blade and Soul I feel have no chance of killing XIV, they are just too different. XIV has no chance of giving the experience of those game, but then again those game have no chance of giving the experience of XIV either.

In the end the only way SE will fail is for the devs to screw up again bad. They need to see what modern mmos have it and incorporate it into a original (not copy/paste mmo) FF type experience. Copying Mainstream or XI will mean 100% chance of the game failing.

It's still a bit too early to tell since their grand re-release is at 2.0. It's vision and direction of the game has been completely revised with the change of director/producer. And obviously, all that content has yet to be completed.

I still believe the majority of the market for FFXIV is in Japan rather than all the other regions combined. That being said, SWTOR doesn't list Japanese as an language option for it's releases. http://www.swtor.com/info/faq

So, it won't really have a large impact on their player base as much. Although, it's not to say they aren't aware of their competitors, since they are trying to aim globally.

It's not just trying to mimic, but that their ideas aren't refined but more of trial and error. This might be due to the time restrictions, where they can't really plan out everything and just have to rush out and deliver it. Even more pressure now since the game is live and not only trying to meet expectations of the publisher but also the players.

    Some examples of revised aspect of the game;
-Crafting, such as the re-revisions they had to make to dyes.
-Core battle mechanics, they seems to be still tinkering around with this.
    -Re-revisions to Monster AIs behaviors.

Truthfully this game isn't much different than you remember and I'm of the opinion it won't be until 2.0 at the very earliest (nearly a year from now). Those of us that have been playing consistently have absolutely nothing left to do content-wise and the next update doesn't seem to be bringing in much in this regard. It's impossible to know if this game "will succeed or not", I like to remain hopeful that 2.0 will be our saving grace. I wouldn't count on it anytime before then, however.

Reason I chose FFXIV instead of waiting for SWtor, is because Swtor felt way too much of a pure WoW Clone with better quest immersion and voice acting and Lightsabers.

I also have a few friends whos been playing Swtor beta for a while and they said to me they wont continue when it officially launches.

But in the end, we cant make you choose, that is for yourself to decide as we all seek different things from our games. Come back and play XIV while its still F2P and see what you think. If you dont like it, then you are free to play games that you do like

When my friends asks me about games they know ive played, I simply ask em to come to my place and let them have a go and play it. I can say its awesome, while they end up hating it.

I think it will. I also think the PS3 launch is the true defining moment.

No it wont, and it is not because the game itself is bad, wish it is to a degree, but more importantly because SE does not know how to market their products, and develop them anymore, it will take a full 2 years from the release of this game, to when it is supposed to be "Release Worthy" that is 2 full YEARS! There is simply no excuse for that, even update's are coming at a snail peace, the game simply can not compete with modern MMO'S, aslo SE make's bad decisions like choosing to start charging at the same time SWOTOR comes out :/ Seems like they dint learn from their mistake of going againts wow last year :/

so by this sense what you are saying is, if you try to do something and you do a bad job, don't try again, give up.

There is a difference in doing your job and it turning bad, and doing and bad job, knowing it is bad, being told it is bad, and then going ahead with it release it and expect to be payed and ask for a raise :/
