This game will most likly succeed in terms of eventully making SE money and being up and runing for 8-10yrs. It is square and their main IP. So tons of capital to throw at it to fix it and final fantasy which they will not let fail.
Now it will most likely never break 1mill subs, so it comes down to what is a success? The "1 million+ subs or the game sucks mentality" or the "Long lasting game with a stable playerbase mentality"
If they release 2.0 with everything they said it will have, and they have enough content where people do not get board. And they successfully have content for hardcore and casuals. Then the game will easily succeed if not be one of the better mmos on the market. But as for being hugly popular, this is XIV the worst mmo ever developed. That mentality alone will stop it from ever reaching its full potential.
ToR is nothing really special in it if you take away the voice acting. Feels like a standard western mmo to me honestly. Those that like that style and like starwars will love ToR, it is put together fairly well. For me I dislike western style mmo design, why I am against alot of what they are adding to XIV, and I am not a starwars fan so ToR is another Meh mmo to me. I would rather play WoW or Rift honestly if I had to play a current western game.
ToR, GW2, Tera, Blade and Soul I feel have no chance of killing XIV, they are just too different. XIV has no chance of giving the experience of those game, but then again those game have no chance of giving the experience of XIV either.
In the end the only way SE will fail is for the devs to screw up again bad. They need to see what modern mmos have it and incorporate it into a original (not copy/paste mmo) FF type experience. Copying Mainstream or XI will mean 100% chance of the game failing.
