It all depends really and its a big matter of opinion and for me I'm waiting to see what happens with 2.0. If the game sticks to the final fantasy traditions and such properly then I think it'll have a pretty good chance. However if it veers to far away from the final fantasy traditions...well I can't really say I personally will stay. In the end I know a lot of people are looking for an online final fantasy and an experience that is like 11 in a way.

And with Dragon Quest X which is gonna have mmo elements and of course Swtor I really do hope we get some heavy FF tradition with 2.0

depends on your idea of success. will it have people playing it yes... will it be popular...no. anyone who has ever played a good mmo, not made by SE, has already gave up and deemed this turd a failure. between now and 2.0 there will be 3 major releases that will draw more than the original release most likely 2.0 combined. swtor,d3,tera, will all 3 draw least 1 million sub at release. mark my words they will be more successful in their first month than this game will be 2 years running. ffxiv is running down the shenmue series path and it is not looking good.

my house is in rebuilding stage. this house is very small and in unpopular area.
the roof, floors, plumbing, and gas are all broke.
my landlord fired the original crew. for not completing the job on time
the new crew comes in and makes all kinds of promises, and shows me pics.
now for next year i have to wait for them to finish the job.
should I move to a more popular, bigger house rent it for same price?
or stay in the part of my house that is not being rebuilt. but still pay same rent as others.

Anyone who has played a good MMO will know that they're all essentially the same and people are always looking for something new to play.

down the shenmue series path and it is not looking good
And what exactly is wrong with Shenmue path? Both games were great.

    very sad and very true

warcraft is the best example, and the best example of why games keep their subs

they all want a new game, but they cant bear to part with their old characters, cuz if they stop playing after 5+ years they will feel like they wasted those 5+ years on a character they will no longer have

Ive been beta testing SWTOR for almost 2 months now, and I was here at launch for XIV, I honestly was incredibly disappointed with XIV, but Yoshi-P is really really turning this game around and doing things no other game that has had this rocky of a start has ever managed. I'm really proud of SE and Yoshi-P for stepping up and doing what NOBODY expected.

Having said that I play XIV ehhh off and on, kinda waiting for 1.20 as it finally looks like it's that one patch that may make me come back for real. As far as SWTOR goes, it's OVERRATED out the wazoo. My first initial reaction was "this is WoW...but in space" and it pretty much is.

Now having said that, we must all concede that WoW was a very successful game and pretty darn fun. I didn't care for it because of the player base and the games lore being screwed up, but it was a fun game. So having said that, SWTOR will be a fun game, if people are looking to jump ship from any MMO out there even WoW then it is a very fair substitute for any MMO out there. Is it the big MMO killing apocolypse everyone is making it out to be? I don't think so. In my opinion the reason it's so hyped is A. Bioware B. People are tired of WoW and getting the same expansion reboxed every 2 years and C. It's a big name franchise like Star Wars. Which A and C won't keep people, but if they're truly tired of WoW, SWTOR might just keep a ton of those players over there, even after the Pandara expansion.

So in short do I think this game will survive SWTOR? Absolutely, but this game won't reach it's zenith in player base and sheer power until v2.0 comes out and everyone sees what is essentially a completely new repackaged version of the game. The game we all should have gotten last year when we bought it. I think after v2.0 you will really see XIV step into the market and compete, nobody has ever done this much to force a MMO to succeed, usually companies just put a skeleton crew in a failed game and let it breathe it's last over a few years of slow painful death. Vanguard Saga of Heroes anyone? lol

    Greetings Everybody,

While we encourage thoughtful discussions on the FINAL FANTASY XIV forums, we would like to keep these discussions solely regarding FINAL FANTASY XIV. Since a lot of this thread contains discussions of other games, I am going to go ahead and lock the thread at this time.

    Regards,
    GM Bublex
