I'll admit, I do normally prefer the Japanese audio in some games, but this game just isn't one of them. The English localization is too good. :x Just my opinion, but the Japanese audio just doesn't sound... right. Characters don't really have much emotion.

I like the use of the dialects to show region disparity. it is pretty much as some have said, takes on the many "fantasy tropes" that have popped up over the past century(ies). As an example WoW for the most part reads like a teen fantasy novel at best, and there is little differentiation between the races mon! (horde has it a bit better :P) Now, all of this is subjective though, and if people didn't enjoy the "teen novel" style those books wouldn't sell so well, still its a disservice to the loc team to try and insist their work is inferior because of a lack of understanding dialects and their nuance.

I understand that the English dialogue is as it is, to give that sort of old, fantasy feel, and I do like it to some extent. But imo it would have more of an impact if only some of the npcs spoke in this way. in short bursts, it's fine, but in longer cutscenes I just lose the thread of exactly what anyones talking about, so some of the story is probably lost on me.

my personal preference would be if the older npcs, and primals spoke like that, but then there were also some "normal-speaking" people on the team that could sort of keep it on track. they could even have bits where our character's like "wtf's he on about?" and then someone explains

English is not my native language and often I find myself having to re-read the text or google a word or two and I love it! It helps me learn new words on top of making me feel like I'm in another world.

I'm German (playing with English text and Japanese audio) and let me tell you:

Be happy that you don't understand the German localization of FFXIV.
The amount of cringe that I suffered while reading the questionable translations and names for certain game mechanics caused my body to twist in unnatural ways.

If it was only in my head, I wouldn't be seeing it in text though, would I? :^)

Don't push JP-text and audio as "original material" when both JP and EN localizations are the "original material".

I quite like the different speech in Eorzea. The differing dialects make the world feel more real, be it the Ala Mhigan's north-english accent or lominsan's pirate speech. Makes it authentic in my humble opinion.

Yes, it did take some time getting used to, and the voice acting ain't too great. Though it isnt bad at all. Listen to the 3.3 trailer, to Estinien in the start. It sounds really good until you see his head. Where the new (HW and onwards) voice acting falls flat is with the lip-synching. It just makes it weird.

I personally find great enjoyment in the localisation and see no reason to change it. Despite you all calling it medieval i would say its more late renaissance, where guns and similar tech was on the rise, not widely popular, but certainly existed- just like in Eorzea.

    Edit:
Added an example of true medieval english (year 1387)

"For men of the est with men of the west, as it were undir the same partie of hevene, acordeth more in sownynge of speche than men of the north with men of the south, therfore it is that Mercii, that beeth men of myddel Engelond, as it were parteners of the endes, understondeth better the side langages, northerne and southerne, than northerne and southerne understondeth either other…"

    Even Urianger isnt that bad...

I get that. I wouldn't want to listen to boring dialogue either.

But that's almost insinuating that modern English in of itself is boring, as if it can't be used to portray a compelling story.

I think the use of Shakespearean English was just a style choice, an aesthetically pleasing one for some, but simply unnecessary for others.
