It seems cheesy and poorly done to me. I wish i could get a true translation in subtitles and listen to japanese audio. My japanese is not good enough to play without at least having english subtitles, but the subtitles reflect the english spoken dialogs..

As far as I'm concerned 'cheesy' would be every character speaking in a generic American accent like in the majority of Western MMO's. This is a game that introduces people to all manner of interesting mythology related matters as well as dialects/accents that aren't commonly embraced by the mainstream media. Then there's neat stuff like Ravana's theme involving Mongolian throat singing.

It's great in my subjective opinion. I am able to comprehend everything. My copy of the holy bible has similar language. I've also read a plethora of fantasy books where the author will occasionally try to implement older standards of English.

But the style of the dialogue the game uses and the changes made to characters in translation are really two separate issues. The archaic English is just a dialect of the language, and so there's no reason in the world that you couldn't use it and still have an accurate translation. The fact that the translation is poor is nothing to do with the dialect used and everything to do with the integrity of the translators and editors.

There is lore missing from the English version of the game. There is lore missing from the Japanese version of the game. There is probably lore missing from the French and German versions of the game. This is certainly a problem and I hope they do a better job of making sure every language gets the complete package in the future, but no version is inherently superior to another.
