I believe the EXP Rate is fine, because its optional now. If you want to level slow, you can slow down yourself, if you want to level fast, you can, your friends can join in and not have to wait months before they can play with you.
I ask, why do you care about the EXP Rate, does it affect you or are you just envious that people have more time to play to level? Or do you feel that the game will some how die with PLing when PLing has been here for over a month now and everyone seems to be boasting about player increase, did the state of the game and the easy levelling bring back players? Whos to know, (SE!)
It is not about skill, in levelling, you know that, you quoted me in your signature, so you know its true, and it is also obvious.
Levelling was originally there to keep people playing and paying. But that is not enough, that is not a bad thing now. Things are changing, look at games today. First Person Shooters have to create web and mobile applications just to be big now, (Elite/Battlelog), the Free 2 Play model is becoming insanely popular and almost being more viable option than paying with many companies seeing higher profits using this model (DC Universe for one tripples their Playerbase and players spent more increasing their model).
Times are changing. People have busy life's, and well FFXIV is stuck in a very tight area right now.
A lot of people cant stand aspects of the game and wish to not maul it out all the time, that is why people prefer quests over fighting mobs and why a lot of games are moving into that direction (tera/sw/dc universe/gw2/etc...)
But what is the meaning to quests over mobs, well the experience is different, unique and ever changing in that you do different scenarios throughout a single quest, where as levelling for the same EXP you do the same scenario constant (claim mob, hit mob, kill mob, claim mob, hit mob, kill mob, claim mob, hit mob, kill mob, etc).
The reason a lot of games succeeded in the past was likely due to variety and not knowing better.
I also think FFXIV would stand a lot better with a slower EXP Rate if there was more places to level. At the moment you do it all in 1 or the other area, there are not a lot of places to go. This is not about "There are X amount of camps", this is about the number of zones there are in game, which obviously is alarming low right now and wont be fixed until v2. So there is no variety, you spend an awful long time grinding in a single area, it becomes dull, and you resent that area discreetly.
When you can do x levels (small increments) on 1 mob, in 1 area, then move to next area and it be completely different, with a completely new mob that requires a new strategy, having this every few levels would remove the essence of the conveyor belt like levelling.
This is how SP games work.
