At level 50 where should I be in the game. There is a ton of things you CAN do at level 50. Very few of them are needed. Once you advance into the Heavensward areas most of the old level 50 stuff becomes somewhat obsolete anyway.

First of all do your level 50 job quest. That (together with the level 45 job quest) will give you some decent armour for starters.
Then follow the MSQ. There is a lot of it to do at level 50, and it will give you all the gear you need as you progress through it.

That is all you really NEED to worry about - everything else is optional.
