Things where negated somewhat, but every event from NA release was valid until Abysea's release. Giving XI probably the largest valid endgame/midgames of any mmo to date (pre-abysea). Some rare level 30 drops where good at endgame for example keeping people doing the whole games content for 8yrs almost.
XIV actually now has a decent amount content (still below the amount of a standard western quest/dungeon grinder though). 3 dungeons, 3 faction bosses, 5 hard nms, 15-16 lesser nms, 3 settlements, ifrit, moogle in the next expansion, around 150ish non-leve quest, around 200ish leve quest, 30ish Factions, and numerous gathering and crafting leves and a ton of classes to level.
But XIV has the western problem of mmos atm, which is negated content every patch. All that above in the end is turned into 3 settlements and ifrit. Darkhold is negated, the 5 hard nms are negated, faction bosses are negated. So 60% of endgame is negated more or less. On top of that it is crazy fast to level in groups so why spend time getting subpar sp in the 10 and 25 dungeons just to be above the level where the gear is worthwhile in a 3-4days. So essentially if you want to focus on progress the 10 and 25 dungeon are negated because gear is replaces too fast and the SP fails hardcore in those places compared to the open world.
Unlike XI, XIV is not building up content. Atm XIV has the same amount of valid content as it did back in Nov of last year... it is new stuff, but the same quantity of valid content that is worth doing. Unless they start releasing content 5 times as fast or stop negating everything... the game will always be in a perpetual state of not enough content, which is easily the #1 problem in the game atm. (lot of annoyances and unfinished things, but without enough content even with those perfect the game will suck)
I am waiting to see what the moogle fight will bring, if those weapons will trump ifrit's weapons... if so then ifrit is also negated. This is my fear atm... and I do not think the devs are even realizing how horrible this is with the lack of stuff to do already.
