because we are at a time where we need this. i've heard too many stories of people wanting to play with friends only to find they are all on different servers because coordination wasn't a strong suite or just found out too late. but it's done a really well in other games and it sorely needs it here... that and an end to inventory size

There is a transfer service available if someone really wanna join his friends on another server.
There is a new cross-server Party Finder functionality (with optional private password) coming in the next patch, which will allow friends or pugs from different server to group together for a Duty.
Inventory size is announced to be increased not long after Stormblood is released.
