A lot of rpgs have you cycle through menus to select an ability. Also, cycling through my menu gives a bit of down time between my skill animations, by the time I get to my next skill the animation has progressed far enough for me to actually select the next skill. Like I said, I'd really rather not mash x/a the whole time. Strategy is key to me, not button mashing. Plus things that are urgent cast are usually macros so that helps too.
If you've played any rpg with a controller, which I'm sure ALL of us have, then the feel for it kicks in naturally.

Most gamers today are just lazy. :/
It's hardly even a matter of efficiency either.
RPGs are very slow in action compared to how i enjoy playing MMOs. when i play an MMO i have a handful of abilities and go through very specific ability rotations that change according to my exact situation which changes depending on how many mobs and which type of mobs (bosses etc.)
therefore, if you want to survive and thrive, lazyness does not exist in the realm of MMORPGs that ive played.

im constantly eyeing cooldowns, mob positions, and agro ranges while in combat.
My left hand is keeping up these various rotations, and my right hand is on the mouse controlling my camera angles and my characters movement/position.
these are things that do not exist in RPGs.
I play regular RPGs which you speak of to relax and i play MMOs because i want the action.
not really sure where you see lazyness in any of that.

i think if you were to replace your enjoyment of the arrow keys for a handful of keybinded abilities you might see what i mean as far as action.
WoW clones are all standard MMORPGs, however, there are two things that make them simulate ARPGs.
1 is the greater lack of ability locking
2 is the lack of scrolling and menus needed to execute abilities.

if 2.0s new seperate UI proves to be what i think its going to be, then i dont see how controller users are going to be able to keep up with some of us experienced hardcore KB/Mouse users. we have the advantage of several tens of keys right at our fingertips while controller users have to keep scrolling.
