Forums tend to bring out the utmost passive aggressive in people. The Like function contributes to that. Gotta have the most snarky "Hah, I sure showed that guy!" response for them sweet likes. Just glad people aren't calling each other by their forum names and posting like they're on facebook. You know those posts that sound like they're built around trying to sound like a quote with trash like "too all my haters" and "stay strong, I believe we can blah blah blah"
XIV forums can be quite bad at times (to which I screencap and laugh at people with friends) but in comparison to a lot of other mmo's I've played, it's pretty tame.

Enjoy if you don't already know about this, a whole thread dedicated to mocking the NA FFXIV forums. It's fun to read.

You think this forum is toxic? Clearly you have visited very few game forums in your life to say so. This one is from least toxic I've ever seen. And from the few you can make an actual conversation. Reddit is ok but unless you make posts on how awesome the game is or draw silly Mi'qote drawings you get down voted to hell.
I blame the RNG! >_>
People do the same stuff for hours/days/weeks/months and getting nothing -> they get angry!
I already quit this RNG crap over a year ago! I ignore everything that involves RNG! >_>
The game makes way more fun that way!
I find it sad too that sometimes people have interesting suggestions and instead of just ignoring it if they have no interest in the topic people feel the need to post "funny" one-liners or GIFs, often resulting in hate or off topic discussions. I go through the first pages of this forums daily and I will only click on those threads that interest me at least a little. I dont mean people that have different opinions. I mean those that are only going into a thread to make fun of it. On the other side there are enough thread creators that are way to sensible and cant understand that maybe not everyone shares their opinion and feel like they are personally attacked by the others.
@Miste: Well I can only speak for my reasons but Texas post did feel a little toxic. Why is it necessary to ask this question? Its like you are in a topic that talks about the bad things of the game and someone comes in and write "if you dislike X why do you still play it?". The OP said that she still enjoys reading here (only likes reddit a little better) and only wonders why its getting more toxic now. Nothing in her post suggest that she hates this forum and absolutely love the other one, just that she noticed a change and wanted an answer. Also since nobody can see the other person one can only imagine how they mean it and its seems that there were quite some people that read it in the negative way. Does a big number of likes make a post true? No, but maybe it can be a hint that the way the sentence was worded was not that good. (And a post can still be mean/aggressive/toxic without name calling. Its sometimes just the way you wrote it.)
My mother tongue is German and not English, so I always just sit there, read everything over a lot of times and really hope that it wont come off as really aggressive or mean in any way. And sometimes when going through the different kind of threads I think to myself that some should really look at their post and ask their self if this is truly still nice or if this could not come over as a personal attack. I know that its not easy, since people can feel attacked by every little thing, but reading some of the posts in this forum really makes me question if some might have forgotten that there is a real other person on the other side of the post. One can be against something or have another opinion but there is no need to attack the other for this and I agree with the OP that it feels like this happens way more.

Well you actually pointed out one of the reasons why you shouldn't assume tone in a post of text. Yes, how you write posts makes a difference, but the problem with assuming without asking for clarification is that not everyone who posts here has English as their mother tongue. Even people with English as their mother tongue have varying degrees of knowledge about the language, the size of their vocabulary, and specific connotation.
You could easily turn that around on the OP and say their post felt a little toxic and ask them why was it necessary to come and post in here asking why these forums are toxic (just an example, I don't actually see it that way myself). It is kind of like you are asking why do people ask questions at all. I don't feel like that is a good argument against what Texa asked. People ask questions because they want information back. Why they ask is reasons they have or because they are unable to understand something so they ask for clarity. Just because we don't understand why someone asks a question doesn't mean that question is inherently toxic.
Why is this a toxic question to ask? If someone posts a lot of things they dislike about a game is it wrong to ask what keeps them still playing it? You could infer the negative that this person is actually trying to say 'well if you don't like it then leave', but why is it we go to the negative interpretation instead of the positive one that they are just asking because they are curious about what the poster does enjoy about the game or to just stay neutral about it?
Also I am not saying that people don't ever post things and they ARE actually trying to be toxic, but making negative assumptions all the time is toxic too if you wanna go that route.
Nothing in Texa's post suggests that she hates OP either so why are we assuming the negative? Also if we are just going to go on negative assumptions here then we shouldn't have double standards.
You could easily assume toxicity from the OP's post too. You could assume based on what they said that they came in here asking 'why are you guys so toxic and why aren't you guys as nice as Reddit people'. That also sounds just as toxic as the negative assumption of what Texa wrote which would be something like 'well if you don't like it here go back where you came from and don't post here'.
Thing is, did either of them actually write those things? No. I just wrote the negative way you could interpret their posts.
My response was basically we should stop doing this (even if Texa could have worded it better). Instead of making assumptions just read it in a neutral way or have the benefit of the doubt to use the positive interpretation instead. If you ask me not reading everything people say negatively would help with toxicity problems.

Reddit is a terrible forum for exactly the reason why you think it is good. The popular or more likable posts float to the top while "toxic" or unpopular posts sink. Ideas are never properly challenged because readers can just ignore the stuff they do not like. "Toxicity" makes people and ideas stronger because people and ideas have to survive attacks. If a simple bit of toxicity can destroy a thread, then the conversation, people involved, or the idea were not strong enough.
EDIT: Spelling.

So why not seek discussion on 4chan? No upvotes, people usually keep anonymous unless it's someone who chooses to use a name, and with the lack of forum tier moderation, you will see everything people have to say. I don't advocate it as a good place but for all that what you claim is better, it's there.
