I just assumed they were referencing the Charles Knight paintings of dinosaurs which depicted Tryannosaurs in a kangaroo stance. The only time I have ever heard someone call a tail a 'third leg' is in reference to a kangaroo, as they often use it to balance. I have only heard this reference while talking directly to an Australian. I work in IT that supports customer's globally, and heard it a scarce few times.
The creature in question uses a tail for balance (That's what the tail is for) but not in the sense they are referring to as a kangaroo would. If you wanted to use that 'third leg' reference more clearly...then the attack should have an animation involving such...such as the creature balancing itself on the tail and kicking at you with hind legs, or something.
