A bit confused on the attack name, "Infatuate"

For those who do not know, there's an enemy in the Palace of the Dead called a Mimic, which can appear from a coffer at random. It uses an attack called Infatuate, which inflicts the player with Accursed Pox (HP regen stops, lower damage dealt, damage over time). Now looking up the meaning of Infatuation gives you this:

verb (used with object), infatuated, infatuating.
    1.
to inspire or possess with a foolish or unreasoning passion, as of love.
    2.
to affect with folly; make foolish or fatuous.

So...are the Mimics madly in love with us/have passion about us that it acts like a curse? o.O? Or is there another meaning to the word I missed? I'm trying to make sense of the attack name with the effect said attack causes.

Don't make sense of FFXIV enemy abilities. You'll go mad. Example: The tyrannosaurus type creatures use an attack called something like 'Third Leg Strike.' ....then hit you with their tail....

    ...

    ....what?

But the tail is also sometimes referred to as a third leg. Assuming you are not giggling like 10 year old when you hear about a third leg :P

The only time I have ever heard someone call a tail a 'third leg' is in reference to a kangaroo, as they often use it to balance. I have only heard this reference while talking directly to an Australian. I work in IT that supports customer's globally, and heard it a scarce few times.

The creature in question uses a tail for balance (That's what the tail is for) but not in the sense they are referring to as a kangaroo would. If you wanted to use that 'third leg' reference more clearly...then the attack should have an animation involving such...such as the creature balancing itself on the tail and kicking at you with hind legs, or something.

To further my point that enemy ability names are just something stoned japanesse developers come up with on a bong fueled night of weed. The boss dinosaur in Solm Al uses an ability called 'Third Leg Foward' or something like that..in which it uses its tail to grab an ooze, and throw it at you...

    1) It's not a leg
    2) If anything, it's more like a hand...it's grabbing something

Edit: Nevermind. That ability is called mad dash. Point still stands. Doesn't really accentuate the notion of grabbing something and throwing it at you..just mentions the 'running to something in a fast manner'

    From the Oxford English Dictionary:

    Infatuate
    Verb
    3. To Stupefy (the senses)
    Obsolete, rare

    Stupefy
    Verb
    4. intransitive To become stupid or torpid; to grow dull or insensible. Now rare

    Stupid
    adj
    1. Having one's faculties deadened or dulled; in a state of stupor, stupefied or stunned . . .
    Obsolete

    That's the best I've got.

I think it's a reference to the folly of having opened the chest, rather than the move itself.

I think the Mimic's attack is meant to invoke the trope of a cursed treasure. Ever heard that old curse, "a pox on your house"? The mimic is doing something similar, throw a(n) [a|curse|d] plague or pox upon you. While under its influence, you become infatuated or incensed with a grudge or malice that slows you down and eats away at you.

At least, that's how I took it, so you might choose to take that with a grain of salt, lol.

Huh, never looked at it that way. Then again, I am not terrible versed on such things. Though hearing "a pox on your house" reminds me of "a plague on both your houses!"

whoever does the english translation for ffxiv is crazy about english, from urianger's speech (i think urianger is the english person at square), to phrases like, "you are well come". anyway, the point is, the person knows all english well and plays with old meanings.

infatuate (v.) Look up infatuate at Dictionary.com
1530s, "turn (something) to foolishness, frustrate by making foolish," from Latin infatuatus, past participle of infatuare "make a fool of," from in- "in" (see in- (2)) + fatuus "foolish" (see fatuous). Specific sense of "inspire (in someone) a foolish passion beyond control of reason" is from 1620s. Related: Infatuated; infatuating.

An infatuated person is so possessed by a misleading idea or passion that his thoughts and conduct are controlled by it and turned into folly. [Century Dictionary]

Apparently there is a disorder associated with extreme infatuation that can cause detrimental health effects.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limerence

"The physiological correlations of intense limerence can include seizure-like trembling, pallor, flushing, heart palpitations, pupil dilation and general weakness. Awkwardness, stuttering, shyness, and confusion predominate at the behavioral level. Less common effects include insomnia, loss of appetite, and passing out."
