How can SE make sure in melee Range RDM isnt squishy as a caster?

So mostly I was meaning more so the blm or summoner , and the only time I see them in melee range is when they have to be, but Im guessing some of the player base is just better at handling squishy gear than I am haha.

Unless there's an AOE to avoid, as a SMN, I am always in Melee range. How else am I going to get my book smacking on? Being squishy only matters if you're taking avoidable damage. In which case, it's the player, not the job or the gear.
