How can SE make sure in melee Range RDM isnt squishy as a caster?

So my very first job was blm, and I have played all three healers, I love my astro and whm. But I'm really curious on this with red mage coming out I'm seriously wondering how many melee attacks they will have. Because I always thought it was a good idea for ranged casters and healers to stay at range not in the middle of the pack.

So I know they aren't gonna make special gear just for red mage but what are they gonna do if they are in like monk range, but wearing caster gear which is very squishy. I know the dv team knows what they are doing but I'm just wondering how they will manage an up close half melee/ caster with caster gear thats the weakest of all of the Disciplines isnt that why they attack only from range? Just wondering peoples thoughts and if anyone else has thoughts about this as well?

It's not unheard of for SMNs to be in melee range auto attacking with their book or Miasma II'ing from within a big group. /shrug

Granted, maybe RDM will have heavier armor. RDM does traditionally use heavier armor than other casters.

So you think they will use Dow gear instead of caster gear wouldnt that be the only way for them to have heavier Armour. And I know its possible I just didnt think it was the brightest idea for me to be in melee range with my blm. Im just curious with the half melee part woudlnt that put them in more danger than the other two casters if they ended up having to wear the same type of gear.

actually... WHM already is a partially close range magick attacker, with holy, fluid aura and assize. how does a squishy mage work in meele range you ask? well, we have tanks in this game...

To the OP's question, obviously the use of armor will figure in this.

Melee dps are pretty squishy in melee range. You have much better odds of survival simply by not getting punched in the face by things. RDMs will work it out.

A lot of ranged players think that being at ranged somehow means they take less damage, which is entirely untrue, as long as you dodge AoEs and don't stand in front of the boss and get swiped you take no more damage in melee range than standing far away, on top of that you make it easier for the healers to heal everyone at once when you're all grouped up.

RDM is also known to wear light armour so it could be getting its own set like blah blah armour of fencing. Which could have mnk/nin level of defense stats.

You could make a game where all you did was run through fields of flowers holding hands and you'd still get a guy telling you you're doing it wrong.

This. I started as a ranged player, then when I first started a melee class it was scary how close I had to stand to the mobs, but really as long as you aren't either the target of the mob or standing in front of its face when it cleaves, you can stand right in its asscrack and take no damage at all, other than unavoidable partywide aoe.

Red mages will be fine standing in melee distance.

This is my pet peeve as a healer. Nothing worse than the Black Mage who thinks that their best way to do DPS is by standing as far away as possible from the group. The worst case this happened to me was in Void Ark where I had 3 black mages in the party and for every single boss battle they would immediately spread out to stand as far away as they could from both each other and the rest of the group. I couldn't even find a spot where I could single target all 3 at once never mind also being in range of the tank or including them in aoe heals. Beyond frustrating. I get that keeping a distance makes it easier to avoid certain types of AoEs, but there's a point where it becomes extreme to the point of bringing down your group. Summoners, Machinists, and Bards don't seem to have this problem staying reasonably close for some reason. Thankfully with the nature of Red Mage melee/ranged hybrid combat I don't think they will either.
