FFs 12 and 13, the only strong element in those games, was their ability to get you addicted to grinding your characters.
After half way or more, both of them you realized your goal, and felt no need to continue on.
Some people liked the bland story of 12, and the plot hole infested soap-drama of 13.
Over all the current guy in charge of FFs has taken out the "Fun of the adventure/story"
FFs of old WERE as Betelgeuzah said.
These are adventurous games for newer players, children and teenagers.
The stories could have as many plot holes in the world, and none of them really hit you in the face like 13s did, because the story was "Fun". (For lack of better word.)
Sorta like a Disney Movie.
Same BS plot hole stuff, but you can enjoy it for the "fun" feeling you get.
I could break this down in many ways, but for now, let's just say part of the problem lies in the fact we grow older.
The New guy focuses less on a fairy tale, and more on a system.
If we could have BOTH Sakaguchi, and I forget the name of the current guy in charge, THEN we would finally be going somewhere.
Gameplay with an adventure.
There's allot to blame on the general advancement of technology as well. (Games like Assassins Creed recycle graphics as much as FFXIV almost. Most new gen games done have much in new locations.)
FFs, IMO should remain targeting the "younger/new to game" crowd, just as disney is better suited sticking to their animated movies.
Spin offs or some other series would probably be better for trying to become hard core IMO.
But some may argue that's what KH should be, when KH on anything short of easy mode, is a bit harder than a traditional old school FF.
But Ironically, Lost Oddyssey did sort of feel like the lost FF title, even sakaguchi was falling into the traps led by SE.
But it also didn't feel as "Fun".
I loved it for its boss encounters, but found the story boring, and not "fun".
ATM most of Testuya Nomuras stuff is very "Fillery" making you spam side quests to waste time, but during the beginning and near the end, his games can get quite addicting for both story, and mechanics. (His biggest glaring flaw is terrible controls in action games, which has been my #1 turn off, even over fetch quests. Too many newer gamers are turned off by action games with poor responsive controls. It's the cheap way out to make a game harder.)
I could ramble on all day about the finer details of all of this, but for now, let's just hope SE finds somewhere to specialize in, since they can no longer try to put everything in a game.
And even more so, learn from their mistakes/successes (which they surprisingly don't seem to do, even sakaguchi. Oh and hope testuyas successes don't go to his head.)
