Reading through 42 pages of this(as of this post) subject, I would like to interject with a question. If job identity was so very much not a concern for the FFXIV dev team as a whole, why bother attaching job storylines to the most iconic job specific gear? I recall the journey taken in 1.0 to gain my AF for War and Pld, helping my brother with his Drg, Pld, and War AF, aswell as many friends. They were not the simple toned down variants we now have (save for HW jobs... How cheated i felt!), they were arduous excursions that (for my part) made obtaining that last item an achievement that truly bespoke of you belonging to those orders.
While crafted gear could be unlocked for this purpose (a mistake imo, but less so than the previously demanded option), they don't have as much connection with FF jobs and as such would not infringe their identity as much.
With Warrior, each piece is tailored made for the profession to draw out the "Inner Beast" , For Dragoons the armor itself is made with the very blood of their enemies. There is a history there, an attention to purpose that i feel some people here simply don't care about or are ignorant of.
The excuse that other games do it also rings hollow... Wild Star, Rift, Lord of The Rings Online? Sadly some of these games are little more than souless cash shop dress up programs hiding what used to be an MMORPG... I mean there is a reason your playing FFXIV rather than those that give you your "freedoms"...
1.0 gave us the feature of anyone wearing what they wanted with a detriment to overall stat performance, that changed with patch 1.21 when jobs were released to not only set a focus on roles but better define our characters in direct relation to the jobs we chose. The very iconic armor pieces some here would claim serve so little purpose became our drive to unlock in those bygone days. It was something we could identify previous FF titles with, something that meant to some of us a great deal as Dalamud grew ever closer.
I can understand wanting an more armored look for healers/ mages, the idea of a shadowy set of robed armor would be much appreciated as a Dark Knight myself. However the idea of a Ninja garbed Warrior swinging his great axe, a Dark Knight armored Bard, or even a Astrologian impersonating a White Mge just feels wrong...
Why is it ok for bikini's, pig onesie's, holiday garb, and other level 1 glamours to be used by all? Because they are soulless and represent nothing but what they were created for. A funny joke available to all with time and coin to obtain, having all the history and importance of the time it took to pick it up.
After all that i am surprised to see so many want an overhaul to a system they know nothing about instead of simply asking for replicas of the current AF gear to made available to all... I would be against it, but does that not make more sense? Replica Gallant Surcoats have to be easier to make than all the revisions offered here...
