I mean, my character in the main story has been referred to as both Azure Dragoon, a capable white mage, recognized as knowledgeable in black magic, and more. Why would she suddenly forget how to wear an article of clothing because she picked up one weapon or another?

And that's beside the fact that I think glamour (as in all character customization) needs to step away from restricting players and just let folk do what they want. It's no fun only being able to make an outfit out of the same highly limited set of items as every other Scholar or whatever.
This is very simple to answer.
The system is simply not designed for this. The game still thinks you are wearing that item somewhere.
It is also the reason why you cannot glamour items that are above your level while you still have the correct job.
To do what you want will probably require a whole revision of the glamour system, if not the whole armor system of the game.
